3rd and 4th gears grinding when shifting

ok tranny gurus, I need some help. During the track event this weekend i noticed that it would grind when i shift into 3rd and 4rth gear, everytime. It would grind in any situation, with heel-toe rev matching or not. Also, I noticed that i could easily move the shifter **** towards the 3rd (or 4th) and get it to grind while in nuetral, in other words, it didnt have that slight resistance before you would actual grind if you tried to put it in gear while the clutch is not depressed. I am guessing both my 3rd and 4th syncros are shot, but im guessing, I am not well versed in trannsmissions.

Note: 1, 2 and 5 dont grind at all.

any ideas?

It is probably your syncros that are going out becouse as you sead driving on the track those are you most frequent gears that you use. My surestion get it rebuilt. If you dont know anybody there locally that can do it theres a guy in Rock Hill SC that done myne and I am more than plesed with it cost me about 1100 buck. his website is www.rx7world.com

dunno if this is your problem prolly not but i was running full synthetic moblie 1 in my car and it was way to think for street aplications but it was great at the track.....try a heavier weight oil? but witht he heavy oil it also makes it just a hair harder to shift(speed wise)

hey damian, this is matt. I meet you while tuning my yellow fd. Anyway, I had similar problems with my tranny late last year. It ended up being my syncros, among other things. I found a really good shop up in St. cloud called JMJ transmision. They did a good job on mine and I would take it back there again next time.

The trannys are very easy to work on. I just replaced my 5th gear, a retainer ring and the bearings.

probably a worn or bent 3-4 shift fork. how likely is it that both the 3rd and 4th synchros go out at the same time? I had this happen on my rx-3

we took the trans oil pan cover thingy off and found this:

This was what was left of a syncro, thus the grinding:

Notice the debris in the gears (circled below), this was causing it to bind and make bad noises:
