2DIN Back to 1DIN – Possible?
My FD currently has a 2DIN head unit, and it is working fine however I am thinking about restoring back to a single DIN and lower cubby (i.e. one of the VDO / Continental radios) to bring back a little more of the stock design. My car had a 2DIN from a previous owner so I have never seen what was originally there before the 2DIN. It seems like there is little or no support for a single DIN radio, just a big square hole if the radio is removed.
Has anyone gone the 2DIN to 1DIN + cubby route, and if so how did you fit the parts in? For example, is there a mounting kit needed or ? I have a new cubby from awhile back so that part is covered.
Thanks in advance for any good info!

I know there's a thin plastic bar that is in the dash that has to be cut out for going double DIN. But I don't know how much that really effects how well it all goes together.
Most stereos use the DIN "cage" that pops in the hole and the stereo locks in to that.

Thanks Dale. I'm wondering how the absence of the plastic separator section will affect the radio and cubby. I guess I need to pull the radio out and look at how the cubby fits in, etc.

I used the following cubby below the radio: B02A-66-9M0A
It should snap in fine without the separator since the tabs are on the side. I'm not sure how the radio would be secured without the separator. You might be able to modify the pocket with some additional plastic to allow for the radio to sit on it with some trial and error. Hope this gives you some ideas!

Thanks, looking at this photo and some others it seems like the middle plastic bar is visible between the radio and cubby. I'll have to investigate what could be used to replicate this back. Or maybe give up on the idea and keep my 2DIN as it is...

There is also the fancy OEM din pocket that has the spring loaded lid.
Anyways to answer your question I am not sure visually how it would look, but you could probably secure two single DIN units without the middle plastic. Most radios come with a cage you have to install that holds the radio. Assuming you can install the cage in a stable way without the middle plastic, the radio shouldn't go anywhere.
If you have the OE DIN pocket it will click into the OEM latches, and should also have a little tail looking poker on the back that fits snugly inside the dash-bar, so once its in there it shouldn't move.
