Finally finished the brake restoration and A/C fab for the wife's S14 so we knocked the dust off of it and made it to our local quiet JDM meet
Also went for the first cruise of the year with a random group that we had never met because I wanted to drive the FD one last time before I tore it down for the SMIC scanning and fab work that needs to be done. It rained all day which is odd for Florida in the Winter but it didn't stop people from showing up
More than 200 enthusiast braved the early morning fog for the first Spanish Bank Greater Vancouver Cars and Coffee of the year. Black ice in the parking lot made things hazardous for cars and pedestrians, but no incidents were observed.
Can't wait for Sevenstock? How about the second biggest RX7 meet on the Westcoast on July 12 at Autodromo, Richmond, B.C. - 30 minutes North of the Blaine (Peace Arch) border crossing?
Big turn-out (again) for Vancouver Cars and Coffee today at Spanish Banks. Headed after to Nitobe Gardens at UBC for some sakura pics at the Sanyo Pavilion.
Excited for our 800 km Vancouver Island Cruise this weekend. Perfect weather forcast.
Its the Tampa Bay Automobile Museum. Honestly, it could have been much better. The place is a LOT smaller than it looks. I spoke to the owner and she said they focus more on the engineering aspects of vehicles. The Rotary exhibit was just a temporary thing and I didn't want to miss it.
A year was too long to get back to Vancouver Island for our annual Tofino roadtrip. We ended covering nearly 1000 km on the Island on largely empty roads in very good cruising condition.
Day 0ne: Nanaimo to Long Beach Always great anticipation at the Horeshoe Bay Ferry terminal Only spot at Long Beach where cars can get close to the beach - stopping in a no-stopping zone spooked the RCMP. Last 100 metres to the Pacific Coast was on foot. This is the view from Ucullet Light House. Last stop before Japan (Kamchatka actually) Day two. Port Alberni to Gold River Sunday morning and no more pulp mills, delivered crystal clear skies. If only tourism could make up for the lost Pulp & Paper revenues. A white NC Miata randomly joined us here in Qualicom Beach (Canada's No.1 retirement town). He said he was headed to Gold River, We invited him to join us and added the 200 km loop to Gold River to our itinerary. We were eight strong by the time we reached secluded Kin Beach hidden behind the Canadian Armed Forces base at Comox for a picnic. At Kin Beach we chanced upon a very early and rare (1992) resident JDM CYM, hidden from view for ten years. Owner had two new in box "C" rotors for sale. Bonus meet-up. Fish, shrimp and chips in Ucullet always a hit!
Final destination Gold River 3 hours North of Nanaimo. Getting the hoods up after each stint likely helped contribute to no overheating problems despite the rare early May 29 Celcius heat inversion. On the second day we had two more FD, an RX-8 and a white Miata NC hardtop join us. Gas was about C$2.20 per litre (think American quart), still cheaper than milk but at 16l/100km costs add up fast. Climbing mountain passes at 140 kmph with the turbos in full song likely did not help the average mileage much.
After the dyno session testing out my new intercooler, the wife and I met up with our good friends for some dinner and Ice cream with a random photoshoot. While we were at this spot, a random stripper pulls up to check out the cars.....she ended up being an RX7 girl. You never know who you may meet day to day. Don't mind the dirty cars, lovebug season was rough this year.....
Westcoast Rotary was strongly represented at Driven this year. Great chance for our group to get together in a festive atmosphere.
Team is in place (16 cars) ready for gates to open. Roof was hot, but cool breezes were blowing up from the river and we were saved by the canopies. Crowds to 5000 people despite ticket pricing. Voted best OEM+ build by piers. Everyone gets a t-shirt. There was a three way tie for second place. Everyone's a winner! Other FD in attendance. Syd wins best overall in show for the third year in a row (out of 300 cars). Park with us next time, SYD! Nakai got busy doing his fifth RWB modification in two weeks in Western Canada. Lots of memorabilia sold and over $5000 raised for charity, with signed 1:24 die-casts getting bid to over $1000 (by one of our members). My WCR practice motor got stripped down and rebuilt many times over the six hours of the show. We proved you can move an entire 13B in the hatch of an FD! Don't let that needle bearing drop!
