Importing a RHD FD

Hi. My name is James and before anything else, I would like to thank you for taking the time to read my post. I was first introduced to the rx7 a year or two ago ( and no, it was not through The Fast & The Furious, but rather, lol, Initial D). But I digress. FDs are not easy to come by here in the states, at least, any decent conditioned one. I am not looking into modded rx7s simply because I wish to work on the car myself. I have been browsing the web and have come across a number of japanese/american companies that import mazda ( or the Efini) rx 7s. After searching the the Department of Travel website and other related websites for hours now, I have still not been able to find information stating that a RHD rx-7 is okay to import. As a last resort, I have come to rx7club and its huge array of knowledge for help. For people who have just skipped over the above, here is the question stated clearly below :P.

Is it OK to import a RHD Mazda Rx-7 from Japan into the U.S.?
By import I mean register as well. If you do know the answer could you please tell me the source of the information as well as information you can give me regarding how I too could access said source. I would appreciate it very much. Thanks for your time.

To import an RHD FD, you'd have to go through years of red tape and battles with several government agencies, and even then it'd still only be quasi legal.

If you want a nice, stock FD, buy my friends 94 PEP. Only $15,000 and it just had a checkup at KDR where everything turned up perfect.

Just so you know Sikopathx, I did use the search. All I could find were threads on conversions and none on the actual cost and process to import a RHD fd.

12) Can I import an FD into the US from overseas?

Not legally, that any of us are aware, but it depends on the state and the intended use of the vehicle. Some owners have managed to import a 92-95 model and get the cars registered and insured, but considering there is essentially no difference it is generallly not worthwhile. It is extremely expensive to legally import a later version of this car for many reasons, much more than the cost of the cars themselves. If you see an FD with 96+ trim, it’s probably a 93-95 with imported parts added later.
