The Z had a bidding war between 2 ppl who obviously really wanted it with deep pockets. The person who won it, added to their collection of red Japanese sport cars.. NSX, RX7 and 3000gt i believe. The Z was apparently the last he wanted to add. Doesn't like Supras.

The RSP Supra is just uber rare..something like less than 90 made. Color has similar impact as a CYM. And apparently the auto is impressive (for an auto), performs well.

Nonetheless.. still pretty wild results.

I'm calling the Z32 auction suspicious, that was a $65k car at best. These guys are bidding twice market value and outbidding each each
by at times $5,000 to $10,000 increments. Normally when an auction is at its upper limit you see $500 to $1,000 increments.

This one just doesn't add up.

Does BAT apply any measures to measure the degree of arms-length bidding?

Bid all you want, there's nothing forcing you to buy when you win. And BAT doesn't disclose how many cars fail to sell to the "winner".

Don’t want to dive too deep away from the FD prices, but it is interesting when these cars are hitting record numbers. 300zx going for more than an FD? Times are crazy indeed.

We are seeing a ton of weird stuff happening with pop culture memorabilia, Pokemon, actions figures, VHS (sealed) and video games (sealed). Lots of shill bidding, insider corruption, market manipulation..

Happened all throughout history, happened with coins in the 80/90s, now they are getting caught red handed; grading companies for games and cards are currently under fire- rightfully so imho.

I wonder if some of these players are dipping into the automotive market, if they haven’t already. They don’t seem to care of the items, as long as they can manip the market and make $$. With the boom in JDM exposure and hype, I don’t think its out of the realm.

FYI, The one dude who was actually charged for this for coins back in the 80’s/90’s “coincidentally” was a big part of Wata Games when that original Super Mario NES game sold for over a mil.. Interesting topic if you are into that stuff.

I would argue that these cars arent exactly part of a speculative market, Imho its just their time, like the 60/70’s classics had theirs- however, as posters above stated: some of these ppl have too much money to handle 🤷 Is it the time for these 90’s gems to become classics? The “collector” cars are not even here in the US yet (minus the USDM rare colors like the CYM, Original R1/R2)..

Spirit R’s, Final Bathurst R models, GTR VSpecs, Supra RZ, Tommy Makinen Evo 6’s, to name a few are right around the corner…

Edit: I would say it’s unlikely that these guys are focused in on our small FD market, but it does seem crazy watching BaT and seeing so many cars just shoot out to space

The winner of the 300ZX commented a few times, it sounds like it just went to a rich collector, nothing suspicious about it. For some people, the difference between $65k and $135k is like the difference between $6k and $8k for a normal person. Two people wanted the car, and this is the result. It is a fluke though, we won't see other 300ZXs selling for even close to that amount.

I figured as much, I guess it struck a chord just breezing through this thread so I mentioned it. Interesting topic to me, curious if there is anyone feeling the same.

Always will have those one-off auctions 🙃 I know if I had excess to spend, I would be “that” collector, same as the 300zx person.. haha

Given "global" S8 prices, top end S6 USDM still have a ways to go. When S8 and S6 can compete on equal ground in the US, it may drive the prices of both higher.

That's what I thought then I saw this:
1995 Nissan 300ZX Twin Turbo Stillen SMZ 5-Speed for sale on BaT Auctions - ending August 3 (Lot #80,494) | Bring a Trailer

6 days to go and the price is already $80k

Yes, it's a genuine Stillen but it's a 300ZX none-the-less.

It appears that the Japanese car collector phenomenon is just getting started.

I had a 1990 Z for a few years and enjoyed it. Cool car but similar to the supra the weight kills it.

I'm not at all surprised by the 105k sale. 5k miles/condition was the difference maker.

If you fail to pay, you do foreit the buyers fee, 5% or I think max is $5k. Also banned from participating for life.

It's something but youre right, you can still walk away.

SCM article reports that 13 Supras were sold at auction for a total of US$2.078 million.

It was a sell off from a drug dealer who showed up dead.

Always loved the 300zx decked out with the Stillen catalogue!

One of my best friends had a 90 300zx TT and put countless miles on it.

Kudos to your friend for actually using the car for what it was intended, enjoyment on the road!

mr2peak If you win a BaT auction and don't close on the sale, you are banned from BaT permanently. Many failed sales go back on BaT and the fact that the former winner did not close is stated.

I think we need to remember that in the early 90's the 4 cars that were most often compared were the FD, the 300Z, the Supra, and then either a Corvette or a Porsche. Sometimes a Mitsubishi 3000 GT. Its no surprise that people like all of them and there are fans of each willing to pay up for what they like.

100% agree.

My dream garage in the 1990s was an FD, 300zx TT, MKIV and a 911

Back in the day when I used to day dream about having cool car collections, I had always dreamt of buying every usdm 90's era jdm 2 door sports car (Nsx, 3000gt, 300zx, Supra, Rx7, etc) to do a proper performance comparison because I don't ever think I really saw what I would consider to be a real comparison. Create the constant by slapping the same wheel / tire combo on each and having a track day / autoX event. I think a video of this nature would've been an instant classic! And I really only started to develop a taste and appreciation German vehicles in the last decade or so. When I was young and impressionable I fell into that old 'manufacture prejudice jazz.'

In 1992, after the third kid was born, I bought a giant white Safari extended wheel base van. The rest of the 90's is essentially a blank, car dreaming wise. In 1994 I had a 30 second glimpse of an FD cruising through the movie theatre district at night. Looked like batman out on a date. Did not see another FD until shopping for a car for my oldest son in 2002, when there was a beat California model in a lot of broken down Japanese tuner cars (we bought a 1996 Probe automatic). Did not see another until about 2014 when the RHD started to land in number. I usually subconciously log every car that passes by, so I assumed FD were never sold in Canada (maybe 3000 were). Picked up Zelda in April 2015, two weeks after retirement, without realizing the significance of it being an S8.

Recently did a JDM car search. car sold at auction in 2014, I assume to the Canadian importer, for Y380,000.

Had you done the "same tires" comparison pretty sure the FD (and Miata's) would be head-and-shoulders above all others.

The in period comparsion tables in the back of road and Track ranked the FD second in a lot of categories. Beaten only by Ferraris or some other exotic.

The big in-period 15 car comparison did not rank the FD highly, cause they could not get the rear wheels to bite (that wheel hop thing).
