so this one time, at the dealership, the customer had a car that had rear end clunks (this is before anyone figured out it was the pillow *****, my friend wrote the bulletin actually), and the guy had had the car in a bunch of times to try and fix it, and failed.
he was talking with the Mazda rep at this point, and he goes since you can't fix the clunks, how about the paint. the rep said ok, as long as we agree you will STFU after this.
so he took his black R1, and painted it M3 purple. Mazda paid for it, it looks pretty nice actually.
That's an amazing story actually Have any pics of this Barney FD?
I just don’t get how someone could say they’d prefer an integra over this $50k+ example of an FD. I get that the Type R integra had a little pep to it, but it’s just not anything close to an FD no matter how you spin it.

Based on the commenter's username, the Integra may hold a special meaning for them!
Also, don't sell the Type-R short for prestige - on BaT they have regularly sold for over $60k and a couple months ago one went for $112k!!!
I would say about the same. This is a 94, so lots of the plastics and door cards are black. Most would not have an urge to swap the carpets and seats to black. If it was a 93, then I would give black interior a $5k premium over tan.

YMMV
Correct. The ITR is an iconic symbol of “tuner culture”

To be fair, you could probably describe a lot of cars from the ‘90s as a tin box LOL.
The USDM Integra Type R is far rarer (under 4,000 made) and arguably more desirable than the FD to a larger group of people. If you add up all of the DC2/DB8 Type R cars (JDM/USDM/etc) you are still at roughly half the total FD RX-7 production on a global scale.
Don’t even get me started on how many of these cars were stolen/destroyed/run down over the years.
For every wrinkle brain who even knows what the FD is, there are 5 drooling smooth brains who remember wanting an ITR so bad they wrote Type R on their spiral notebooks.
It's just how the market works. It's not an indictment or vindication of either chassis. Like comparing apple and bowling *****.

Aside from the assumptions about the intelligence of ITR owners/fans (the ITR owner I know is a brilliant engineer ), I agree that they're simply more desirable to a larger group of people. The FD is niche by comparison.
The ITR is also a damned good car. I find that many people who have assumptions about them haven't really experience it firsthand. This makes sense, as there were only 3,800 or so made for the US market. JDM examples only recently became available here. I remember being utterly shocked when I had the pleasure of spending time in one at an autocross over a decade ago.
I'm sure the actual measurable intelligence of the consumer base is not significantly different. I'm also sure they're not singing the praises of our chassis or owner base in ITR-land.
And, it was mostly to poke fun and highlight the difference in marketing strategies.
The Integra chassis is not rare or obscure. It's incredibly common.
Pretending the ITR is not an Integra is the same thing as pretending an SRT-4 is not a Neon.
Owning an FD requires a certain sort of persistence, dedication, (masochism) and knowledge. Owning a special Honda just requires money. No specialists, special knowledge, or mortal-anxiety required.
The ITR was peak Honda. For a long time it was widely regarded as the best handling FWD car ever made. There are a ton of significant changes relative to non-ITR trims. The engine was semi-exotic with its 8500+ RPM redline and record-setting power/liter. It campaigned successfully in a very visible Speedvision/Speed race series that was Honda/Acura-backed. It was the halo car for many people who drove other Honda products. There is huge lore.
Imo, there're many reasons why the ITR is a superior jdm vehicle to FD; seam welding being one of the most blatantly obvious reasons.
I agree that the FD is an absolutely 'cool car' with a very unique place in auto history but we shouldn't pretend for one second that the majority of 'rotary enthusiasts' aren't still riding 787B hype just like Honda fans riding on x,y z, etc. To me, there is no discernible difference in lore. I personally consider Honda to be the greatest jdm company (for many reasons) and the NSX-R as the purest Japanese sports car ever produced. There's definitely a reason whyTsuchiya owns one.
I personally contend that the late 90's through early 00's (most specifically 1999-2002) was hands down the greatest era of Japanese sports car production in history.
The ITR holds any value advantage due to mass-market appeal, because they made 200,000 in the first four years of the integra badge.
Pokemon cards printed on fancy cardboard, also cost lots of money for subjective reasons.
Sorry, boys. It's just a Neon. I don't care if you stitch welded it, and put a hot motor in it.
There's no debate because you're the only person comparing the NSX and ITR.

You're entitled to your opinion. It's wrong, but you're entitled to it.
