I just ran across this thread and it is certainly timely.

My 7 has been down for a well deserved heart transplant and I haven't been able to drive it for over 6 weeks--- I started to wonder if I should be driving something more "mature" ... like a 911 porsche or an Audi TT or an M3. Then I wake up in a cold sweat wondering why I am dreaming that ****. Most of the time I could care less what other people think about how I look in my car (I am ugly enough to have learned no to give a **** about what I look like period).

I bought the FD because of the way it makes me feel, y'know, inside. From the first minute I sat in an FD I thought they molded it to me. From the first instant I drove it, I realized it was much more fun, responsive, exciting, and demanding than any car I had ever driven (including 'vettes, porsches, brit sport cars [spitfires, TR4s, TR6s, AH 3000s, MGs etc] ferraris and lambos). For the first year, I hardly noticed that people were looking at me at all, and I NEVER thought they were thinking, "He's too old to be driving that car!"

Now at 55, I sometimes think maybe I should trade the 7 for something else. . . something that has a "mature" demeanor. Well I have decided that I will be ready to consider other options only when I find a car that makes me feel the way the FD makes me feel, handles as well as the FD handles, accelerates like the FD accelerates, challenges me the way the FD challenges me, and has styling that makes me grin from ear to ear like the FD does, then maybe.... just maybe..... it will be time for a change.

By the time I get so infirm that I can't physically handle the FD, I will be too physically screwed up to handle the Porsche, M3, Audi etc and I will have to go back to driving my Volvo 245 wagon as a daily driver....no wait..... that's a five speed also, so I will have to buy an autoshifter Volvo 240 sedan.

Manny- you are never too old unless you think so.
Until then I don't give a damn whether they have to get me out of the driver's seat with a crane.
Very well said. I hope to be like you in 30 years.

I agree with the post above. Nobody is ever too old for an FD. I will have my FD until I die and hopefully it will be in my future family forever.

<< I will have my FD until I die and hopefully it will be in my future family forever. >>

my thoughts exactly.

but i think there's def. a too young and too old to an FD.. or any real sports car for that matter..

ur 2 young if you're all about runnin WOT every chance u get on public streets, cuz ull prob kill ur car, urself, and someone else w/ u real fast... (aka ur prob rite, under 21 lol..for the most part)

but i think ur def. too old when u stop realizin wut ur drivin...a twin turbo (or single) rotary rocket... i cant handle seein the "elderly" crowd doin 45 in a 55 in the right lane...ALL the time. my philosophy is if u bought the power, USE it. (Responsibly, at that). but if u drive it just cuz it's a "hot" or "nice" car...when ur rex becomes simply just transportation) day in and day out, and u never really give those turbos a spin, never downshift/drift into a turn, never peel out from a stop just 2 feel the blood rushin to ur head as u get pulled back into your seat... well, alas, maybe you've outgrown your toy. =)

PS...yea, im in the 21 - 30 yr old crowd =)

I think you phrased the question wrong. It should be how young is to young to own or even drive a FD. I am 33 and wont vote becuse once you own a FD I dont think you will ever realy want to part with it.

Anyone ever guess your age? I got tired after the 4th page. You'll be 38 in August, is that right? Still young!

I just turned 31 in july..

I think as long as you are health and have good hand eye cordination.. You are good to own and drive an FD..
If you are 21 and missing an eye , a leg, and an arm.. I think thats worse than 80 year old man whos in good health.

I'm hoping I could own another FD and keep it for the rest of my life.. hence I have 4 parts engine... hehee

Yup, 19th of this month, I'll be 38. After having my car sit at Rx7 Store since June 1, I find myself looking forward to getting my car back, racking up the break-in miles, tuning the motor, and going banzai again LOL.

I think you are too old when you start threads like the one above this one..." Is the FD jut another ricer car?"

But honestly you are never too old!! Only when you go thru 4 city blocks with your foot on the gas thinking it is the brake, do you need to seriously think about getting out of the vehicle.oh yeah...amd wen you don't boost thru all gears you are too old as well!!!

Can't spell because you're too cool or just don't care? Too young.
Can't spell because your fingers don't work anymore? Too old.

Well, I figure,.. as long as your Dentures can stay on while braking hard,....or,.... if you can keep your Depends clean and unsoiled while going WOT,...then,..you're never to old to drive an FD!!

Later Sonny....

I know I'm late coming into this, but here's my perspective:

It's not a question of whether someone is too young or old. It is a question of dedication. Owning any exotic car (and I consider a twin turbo rotary exotic, ok?? ) is going to be somewhat time consuming and expensive, as well as there being tons of maintenance and upkeep. The day where you go out to the garage, look at the FD and think "Jeez, what a piece of junk, it's taking up too much of my time" is when you are too "old" for a FD.

Anyone, no matter what age, who is willing to go through the difficulties of owning and modding such a car is well deserving of the exhiliration of the drive. Those willing to put the work into the car know that amazing feeling of when it is just you, *the* machine, and the road ahead.

Yup. Been through this myself at each engine failure. Yet, I still keep the damn thing. It's a sickness--really...

Thought I'd follow up on this thread I started awhile back.

I sold my FD to a guy in Manhattan (last Saturday--Nov 13)--so I guess, at age 38, I'm officically too old to own an FD LOL

The FD's been a great sports car for me (my first and only sports car ever). I've learned all my high-performance driving on it, over the nearly 9 years of ownership.

It was very hard to let the car go to the new owner.

After almost a week since the transfer of ownership, I'm fairing better than I thought--being without the "beast".

Hope you all continue to enjoy your FDs, as I know my car's new owner WILL enjoy his "beast"!
