How old is too old for owning an FD3S
Young people (in their teens) know where my FD3S is garaged. They come to my house to check out the car. They want to know whether my seats are racing seats or stock. It's down right scary to know that people know where I am on the road, and what I was doing, cuz my red FD3S is so well-known on my end of town.
So my question is, how old is too old for a male owner of an FD3S? I'm curious if I've outgrown my FD3S. For privacy reasons I won't devulge my age, but I'm game for anyone willing to guess :) Hint, I'm over 30 :) |

I'd say 70. I've had my ass kicked by some very fast 50-60 year old guys on the track. |
I'm 34.
Our local track group has guys ranging from just out of college to retired with kids older than I am. A good friend of mine's father in law is well in his 70's and still takes out his '74 Pantera. You're never too old. What you DO outgrow is gaudy body kits, excessive lighting, non-functional aero devices, stickers, etc. |

That's funny that you should pose such a question. There have been many references regarding drivers being too young and inexperienced to handle such a car. It is an equally valid question about being too old. Unfortuantely, people age at differing rates. Some 50 year olds are in such bad physical condition that they couldn't possibly drive any car safely. Conversely, I would bet that there are some men in their 80's that would be just fine.
So my answer is that there is no answer. Anyone who is capable of controlling the car in an emergency situation should be able to drive one, regardless of age. |

We know what too young is, but what is too old? So often, I find myself chuckling at a 50-year-old male running around in an Eclipse GS, or C5 Corvette for that matter. I wonder if that same 50-year-old male would be "chuckled" at, if he were seen running around town in a well-prepped FD3S, with NO bodykits, lights, wings, etc. An FD prepped like mine or Peter's for instance? |
I'd drive an FD even if I was 100 years old. As long as your mental and motor capacities are worthy of your drivers licence, why not?

I say, the really sweet sports cars need a driver mature enough to own them for the driving experience, not the social factor. I find young guys out of place in any corvettes or third gens. No one is too old to enjoy a high performance car. You shouldn't feel at all self conscious in your car.
I have seen a few of your posts, and recall you being around 75 years old. That's my guess....75!! Not too old for an FD!! |

Seriously, I don't think you are ever too old for a sports car. You are only as young as you feel. If you are no longer confortable driving the car (whether position or handling the power), then it's time to move on. |
I'm getting tired of NOT having a designated place (cup holder) for my prune juice. But those little cubby holes work great to help secure my dentures while at the track.!! Want to race...sonny?? :)

Aside from cost and realistic means of acquiring the car, I wouldn't say any age is too old...nothing different from loving vette owners.:)

I justify it by having a luxo-cruiser and my FD.
There really isn't a good combination car. Maybe an M5, but they are pricey. |
I think when you get old enough that you cant get out of the driver seat with out help cause it so low to the ground. That when you are too old.

I'm 41, and I love it when the entire neighborhood stops by throughout the day asking "what are you doing to it now?" every time I am in my garage. I've never gotton any "old guy" comments when out at shows or meets. It's soooo sweet to have the 18-24 year old women make a b-line through the lot to check my car out, instead of the dozens of strobed and neoned stereo thumpers. My 19 year old step-son desperately wants to drive my car, but has accepted that I will never allow him to do so(2 totalled vehicles within the 1st year of driving). Sucks to be him!:) Mike |
Manny, if you're asking if you should have "moved on" by now to avoid owning and driving a car that it seems that every bubblegum popping teenage shit in America now owns thanks to their parents and a certain movie, then the answer is... yes. :)
If you wanted to stay ahead of the ankle biter curve, you should be driving a Z06 or Viper GTS (or equivalent) at this point. Something that many parents can't afford, let alone would buy for their misbegotten hydrocephalic drooling spawn. :) If you choose to stick with "old technology", eventually the price will drop to the point that almost anyone can afford one, regardless of what it was to begin with. If those people don't happen to constitute the company you want to keep or associate with, then you know what you need to do. |

I see nothing BUT 50+ year olds in C5's. :D When I see a younger person driving a C5, I secretly assume it's "daddy's" car... though I know better than to make a judgement like that. In general the FD is a very unique car for very unique individuals, which come in all ages. Specific to this case, I'd say the body style is a very classic one. And there aren't quite enough of them out there for people to associate it with any particular demographic. |

We have a guy that comes to our track events that is one of the premier heart surgeons in the area. He is 68 minimum. looks older, drivers better than most. Has a collection of Ferraris that is simply incredible, and drivers the snot out of a GT-1 camaro. Too old, what a silly thing to say. 1R1
