Age is nothing but a number.I bought my fd 10 years ago brand new from the dealer.I was 21 then,now I'm 31 and love my fd even more than ever.

I'd argue that 31 years old is just right for the FD3S

 

never too old. Its cool to see older guys driving these.

 

This thread is why people laugh at the forum. Paul Newman or Paul Frere can outdrive most people. Don't know hwo they are? Use google.

 

haha, my dad is 64 and he gets a kick out of driving my rx7. He owns 2 caddi's, and a porsche 911. He swears "If it wasnt a jap trap, id own one"

 

I'd love to have any of my RX-7's when I'm in my "golden" years. It takes a man of class to pull off the ability to drive any car at that age. Any car. This could mean that it's a complete sleeper when a hush-hush exhaust and a huge single turbo but appear stock.

The RX-7 is also a vehicle of youth and style. Sounds like a case of instant "fountain of youth". You automatically gain (actually probably lose 4 years of life driving an RX-7.

If you get out of the car and think you look too old, you are. It's a state of a mind. An 80 year old man that creeps out of an RX-7 would just blow my mind. I'd have a lot of respect for them. Besides, I'm sure older gentlemen like Mario Andretti or Jacki Steward could throw around a car better than any of us can imagine.

 

Just agreeing with another jimlab statement. Though i'm 24 with a weird FD, my trusty accord is so much more comfortable to just drive around. (However accords still seem to insinuate races from others at times.)

bleh, but thats what a 'daily driver' is for right.

I sometimes wonder if my loud-*** car is too immature for a 35 yr old. I guess I just don't ever want to be lumped in with the ricer-honda-fartcan-crowd. SF is infested with them.

 

It all depends on what you want out of a car. If all you want to do is pose, and try and beat your friends cars then too old is about 21.

If all you want to do is get to work and back then your not too old, your just a very bad judge of what constitutes 'practical' and 'viable'.

If all you want is a weekend racer that you can race at track days, take on long weekend blasts through the local forests and occasionally take for random trips when you just feel like having fun rather than actually getting there (hell, you probably wont anyway ), then you're never too old IMHO.

I'm almost 50 years old. I've got over $50K in my FD. Everyone who knows me asks me why I bought it/drive it, including my wife. I kick *** on all of my friends more expensive cars and they say it's because I'm a better driver, which I'm not. Most people don't give the car a second look except mostly kids. So I go out and buy an '03 Porsche TT for my daily commuter. Now nobody asks dumb questions like why I bought it. Everybody looks at it and my wife likes to go for rides. Still my FD "feels" faster and is alot more fun to drive (mine has a built in endorphin release button which I push regularly). It's difficult to break loose and get sideways in the TT with awd, traction control & stability control. As Mario Andretti says "If everything seems like it's under control, you're not driving fast enough!". Tom

 

Right. Not to mention hauling your RX-7's rear subframe to the fabrication shop with plenty of room left over for groceries...

I just ran across this thread and it is certainly timely.

My 7 has been down for a well deserved heart transplant and I haven't been able to drive it for over 6 weeks--- I started to wonder if I should be driving something more "mature" ... like a 911 porsche or an Audi TT or an M3. Then I wake up in a cold sweat wondering why I am dreaming that ****. Most of the time I could care less what other people think about how I look in my car (I am ugly enough to have learned no to give a **** about what I look like period).

I bought the FD because of the way it makes me feel, y'know, inside. From the first minute I sat in an FD I thought they molded it to me. From the first instant I drove it, I realized it was much more fun, responsive, exciting, and demanding than any car I had ever driven (including 'vettes, porsches, brit sport cars [spitfires, TR4s, TR6s, AH 3000s, MGs etc] ferraris and lambos). For the first year, I hardly noticed that people were looking at me at all, and I NEVER thought they were thinking, "He's too old to be driving that car!"

Now at 55, I sometimes think maybe I should trade the 7 for something else. . . something that has a "mature" demeanor. Well I have decided that I will be ready to consider other options only when I find a car that makes me feel the way the FD makes me feel, handles as well as the FD handles, accelerates like the FD accelerates, challenges me the way the FD challenges me, and has styling that makes me grin from ear to ear like the FD does, then maybe.... just maybe..... it will be time for a change.

By the time I get so infirm that I can't physically handle the FD, I will be too physically screwed up to handle the Porsche, M3, Audi etc and I will have to go back to driving my Volvo 245 wagon as a daily driver....no wait..... that's a five speed also, so I will have to buy an autoshifter Volvo 240 sedan.

Until then I don't give a damn whether they have to get me out of the driver's seat with a crane.

Manny, actually the reason I got the TT is because I was spending way too much time on this forum and too much money on my FD and when the FD was apart I was always using my wife's truck (and she uses her truck to walk the dogs). So my therapist recommended that I cut back on FD internet chat rooms (which would help with my FD envy problem and possibly my speed addiction) and find a new hobby to divert my attention. In retrospect, I believe she was thinking more like taking up golf or something. Anyway, everybody has their own problems, ain't life great! Tom

You are too old when you forget how hard a young person (assuming their parents didnt just buy it for them) would have to work to get, keep and maintain one. At my age with my limited income it takes a TON of dedication to keep my car.

 

I bought my FD about a month ago with my own money (I'm 20 years old) and I say that anyone who is willing to learn how to drive this car and learn how to maintain it properly, isn't too young or too old to drive it. Am I right?

 

The only reason they looked out of place is because new Mustangs have become chick cars. I always see Middle aged women driving Mustangs. Mid-life crisis. Get a Miata like everyone else.
