Question Holy stuff, this site is so strange

Usually I read a sites sticky items first so I can get a feel for what the site is like. I have been searching for anything RX-7 third gen since there is almost nothing at all in the real world. When I first found this site, I just thought, great another place for people to post E-Bay listings and talk carbon wings or other useless garbage.

After reading some of the postings in this thread, man, guess that this group is actually much better then I originally thought. For the most part a good bunch of people that really know these cars.

After one posting I learned more then 8 months of prodding at the dealership for any information that they would give me on that engine other then 'we have to replace it' or 'we have to put it on some really expensive thing with really expensive tools at really expensive prices for reasons that we cannot share with you'.

Great stuff, especially the newby postings, haven't laughed that hard since I owned this monster (been a while).

Just a thought... what about giving post "owners" (the person who starts the post) the ability to delete posts in his (or her) own thread?

For example, some brainiac shows up in my V8 thread just to express his highly enlightened viewpoint on putting a shitty old V8 into my RX-7, and instead of myself and others feeling obligated to respond, *pow* his post is gone.

It would allow a thread owner to police his own thread, and if the thread happened to degenerate (as so many do these days) into Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dumb leg-humping each other in gibberish, you could just delete every post they made. Think of it as "Febreze for retards".

But Jim, that would get rid of about half the posts in your thread

Ok, I was going to edit my post above this one but its been over 30 minutes so I couldnt, kind of a wierd rule.

Anyway, I couldnt read the entire thread so this might have been mentioned, I could only make it to page 4 or 5.

I'm down with the suggestion of having a section that you have to be invited to from the moderator of that section....HOWEVER I think that the person gaining access should be voted on by the existing members of the section then let in by the mod so that no one person has full control over who comes in and out.

Whats wrong with that??? EVERYONE can still have access to all the awsome info that would be in there. It can be set up so that everyone has viewing rights but just no posting rights. This way the newbies that actually care can research and run searches in that area but not be alowed to muck it up with "newbie" type questions.

Anyway, just my .02. I've been here since there were about 200-300 members and i could read every single new post for the day in about 45 minutes lol, Those were the good ol' days haha

Maybe something easier to do, and less apt to cause any sort of abuse of power... is adding an "ignore" list for each user. That way anyone you consider a troll will be prohibited from posting in your threads.

Not a bad idea... controlled ostracism. If enough people don't like member "X", then he (and his nasty little leg-humping butt monkey pal, but I'm not really talking about any particular members... honest) would quickly run out of threads in which he can post.

It would make it very easy for a user to prevent his (or her) thread from being hijacked by the kindergarten class, but what happens if the original poster doesn't have a person on his ignore list and tries to add them after they've already posted in the thread? Just working through the scenario, not poking a hole in your idea.

I would imagine they can add a bit of code to check before a reply is submitted. That way you can add people as you go, or remove them as needed. This wouldn't prevent anyone from reading a thread, but rather causing trouble.

Damn, Jim...that's a great idea! I thought of that when I was in my "dammit I'm selling my car" mode and had a couple people trashing my thread just for the sake of trashing it. The only problem would be if say you WERE trying to sell something, etc etc and just decided that what the person was saying was detrimental to your sale; even if they spoke the truth you could delete their "warning to others" or whatever to make yourself look better.

<shrug> It all comes to trust at one point or another.
