Question where to install sender for autometer temp guage

i bought a autometer electric temp guage and i was told to install it in the rear drivers side of the engine next to the oil pressure sensor so i went to take the factory one of and it snapped off like it was made of paper..lol so anyway im not even gonna try to get it out so i was wondering if i can install the sender at the bottom drivers side of the radiator where the two wires connect to a factory sensor...im running a standalone ecu so that sensor i think is useless anyway...

Its a water temp gauge? I installed mine where the stock temp sender is. Do you have an S4? Ive seen people with S4s install them in the water neck, next to the rad cap.

Ooh.. Damn.. Why dont you just get a tap and die set and tap it out? Its not to hard. You do need to take off the water pump housing though.

i personally think its better to put it where the stock one is. I think it should go there because im pretty sure that the the water leaves the engine there there for is a more accurate engine operating temp than by the thermostat because the coolant hasnt circulated through the block yet so its going to be colder. thats just me... my sender is in my neck though because it was plug and play no tapping required

The stock one is nowhere near the water pump, thats a difference sensor that you shouldn't remove because the ECU uses it. Also, don't install it in the water filler neck because it is AFTER the thermostat, so it if fails closed you will never know and toast the motor.
If you can't/don't want to mount it in the stock location, then I came up with a good alternative using 10-15 bucks in parts from home depot.
Here is the writeup: https://www.rx7club.com/showthread.p...t=water+sensor
Read the whole thing before you do anything, as I kinda modified it halfway through. I am planning on doing a proper writeup on the RX-7 wiki (www.globalvicinity.com) but haven't had time lately.
It works GREAT and is pretty easy to do. It gives a good temp reading, since its comming right out of the block, and it has excellent flow past the sensor yielding quick readings. I know this because I was running low on coolant and overheated it very slightly and saw some very rapid movements.

I have heard of several people that have drilled a new hole in the water pump housing, though. I just didn't want to go that route because I wanted to find an easy way to do it with off the shelf components.

Direct quote from the FAQ:

Where do I install the sensor for my aftermarket temperature gauge?
There has been lots of discussion about where to mount water temp sensors/senders. The best location is on the water pump housing near the stock ECT (Engine Coolant Temperature) sensor. Drill and tap according to the threads on your sensor (usually 1/8" NPT). It is important this this sensor be installed before the thermostat. See the following topics for more information:

the stock water temp sensor cannot be replaced like that. the sensor that is before the thermostat, kinda under the alternator, at very biggining of the fillerneck on the backside.

that sensor cannot be replaced because your car will not start.

I broke that sensor one time and didnt think much of it and left it unrplaced. WHen i went to start the car it would just keep cranking and never turned on.

But when i put a new sensor in there it started right up without any probs.

That's nice but your Autometer sensor is almost certainly 1/8NPT and that stock sensor isn't so it's not a plug-n-play install.

its a simple adapter that goes into the stock location, then you screw the 1/8" NPT sender into that and waalaa! you have your temp sender mounted in the water pump housing with no mods needed for the stock location..

Do a google search for sunpro metric adapter kit. Its like 10 dollars plus 5 shipping and comes with about 10 adapters that you can use all over the engine .
