What to do...

5. If I go with a turbo swap, I'd be buying from jdmtigerjapanese since they're in Ontario. I could get a whole front clip shipped to me for around 2,000. That gets me a JDM engine, transmission, wiring, TII hood and anything else I needed. Then I'd be buying the turbo driveshaft, LSD and axles. I would eventually upgrade to the 4-piston brakes as well. But all of this could be bought with 3-4k and from what I've heard for S5's, basically plug and play.

I can relate to wanting to have a hobby outside of school being a top priority. Having hobbies is healthy psychologically, because we all know that all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.
If you're dead set on working on your car, go with #2. Since you make next to no money right now, even with all things paid for, you can spend a little out of pocket on your car and still have a little left over for routine or emergency maintenance. Also, the advantage of installing a piece at a time is that you can easily diagnose and fix a problem when it arises.
What to install first though? I'd make it a point to get wise on your car, and hunt down all of the pertinent Service Bulletins. Get a compression test done and get a baseline as to the overall health of your engine. After that, I would take care of all of the documented reliability mods.
Cheers

From Sept - April in this order
Maintenance
Basslink Subwoofer
Atkins port sleeves
Coilovers
Crown Vics/Tires
=~2,500$
Then from April-September I will buy the following:
Front Turbo Clip (Engine, tranny, ecu, harness, TII hood, front 4pot brakes, etc)
Turbo Drivetrain
= ~3,500
I could buy these things while still have a lot of money left over for clothing, groceries, gas, night outs with the girlfriend, etc.
Really? I've heard good things about their engines, never searched about their front clips. The reason why I'd want this is to easily get the hood, front brakes, ecu, harness, engine and transmission all in one shot AND having a front bumper and fenders I could easily sell, and also some engine components.
Are people getting bad engines? I could always get the engine streetported and rebuilt after buying it. They're the only place I know of in Ontario that gets JDM engines. Their prices are better than almost anything I've seen from American dealers and the shipping is dirt cheap.

if he's local he can physically inspect and test the engine, so that's the single exception. i'm sure the ones they ship they keep in a separate area outside in a lake behind their facility.
but i have a hard time recommending them even then, since they've totally fucked over more than a small handful of people. hundreds to thousands i'm sure..

Thanks. Either I'm terrible at using the search engine, or the engine is just terrible.
1&2. I'm with you for buying parts one at a time. You don't get bored of your car this way, it's always changing like you said.
3. I drive 100%. No highways, no roads with a limit faster than 60kph. I park at a college which involves idiotic drivers and hard to find spaces. My girlfriend already got backed into within a week. Having a small car could help with this. I may drive home(600km round trip) once or twice a year. But I find my N/A RX7 really slow, I can just imagine a Miata. I'm aware that the power-to-weight is about the same for the 1.8L '94-'97's, but there's just something about having 100whp that makes me think I'll want to upgrade to a faster car.
4. I've always wanted an S2k. I had a down payment on one two years ago, but I couldn't get the loan due to not working long enough. I was inlove with it 71,000kms, OEM painted hardtop, 5zigen wheels and it was the cleanest s2k I've seen in person. Oh well, **** happens.

Oddly, my dream car would be a bridgeported 20b single turbo in an NA Miata. One day...
I went for a drive downtown today and seen my reflection off the buildings and realized I did love this car and want to keep it. I'm going to buy parts as the paychecks come in over the next few winter months and then come spring, buy wheels and tires then once I'm working 40+ hours a week during the summer, buy my turbo swap.

i'd buy from tiger if they were local, but i'm expecting to have the engine apart anyways, its 25 years old, and even if compression is fine, it can still have bad water seals or smoke...

i think the same i guess, i've had a miata, and it was actually really fun, but i actually own an FC (well two if you're counting). the S2k is really nice, and they are fast, but they just don't do anything for me?

Yup. Start modding your car and you will get a different kind of education.
Drive your RX7. Wash it, maintain it. Keep it clean and shiny inside and out. Chicks will dig it.
Maybe tires/wheels, springs and shocks, a subwoofer, but really it's a slippery slope. Once you start, where does it end?
You say school is paid for-by who? Your parents or a relative? Someone is investing heavily in your education. You should honor that investment and investor by not being frivolous with your earned money. Kudos that you are helping out with your work. Save your money for a rainy day, a down payment on a home, a fabulous honeymoon trip. Use it on something that will make you proud of your accomplishments.
Good Luck.

save it for a down payment on a house, not a bad market for buyers even when you get out of school.
the thing you have to look forward to being a garage to keep your car in, instead of renting when you get out of school and worrying about your car out in the elements and under the eyes of thieves.

I plan on moving back home with parents and working after college to save up. I'd prefer free rent, free food and free amenities all while being able to save up for a down payment on a house. I can't wait to have a garage. My garage could be bigger than my house for all I care.
****. Everything you take from your parents after you graduate keeps you in a state of arrested development. Read chapter 5 titled 'Economic Outpatient Care' in a book called 'The Millionaire Next Door'. Read the whole book. It could be worth more than your college education.
Good Luck.

I know I may not be living on my own technically, but I take care of myself, buy my own food, pay for my own gas, pay for my cell phone, pay for internet. They're helping out by paying rent and tuition. The only difference between now and in the future when everything is on me is that I will have a real job that pays more than 11$ an hour with 15-20 hours a week so I could afford house payments/taxes, bills, etc. I could if I wanted pay for rent and insurance on my own, but that would require working a lot of hours during school and school is my main priority.
Besides, if I'm trying to save for a house, why would I spend the money I could be saving on an apartment when I'm welcome at my home rent free, or even at a low monthly rent.

Putting money in savings (like the market, not a savings account) at your tender age pays huge dividends down the road. It may not seem like much now but it has many many years to work in your favor. And when you earn more then $11 you will see how you still won't be making all that much.
