What is a CDI?

I've notice people have been telling me to get a CDI due to poor gas mileage, even when I shift at the light.

So.. what is it?

my other question....

I have an 88 gxl n/a.. what and where is the idle suppose to be? When I turn the car on to allow it to warm up - it'll stay at 3k rpm. Isn't that bad, because the 6ports (correct me if I'm wrong) aren't fully opened until the engine warms up? If I hit the throttle, it'll bounce down to 1.5k rpm. I believe that's still a little high.

So... should I fix my TPS (to which I have not a clue how to do) or what?

no idea on the CDI

Your engine has a warmup cycle, that's why it's so high until you touch the gas. If you want to avoid that all together, start your car in gear. Then it shouldn't do that.

Yes, your Idle is high, it should be closer to 700 ( If I remember right ) Check fc3s-pro.com for the adjustment procedure.

Yeah, either way, if it's in netural or in gear, it'll idle high like that at warm up... so it kinda worries me..

and thanks for in info!

Edit:

the site also happens to have information on CDI

Actually........... That is the entire warm up process. Once the car is started, it will automatically go right up to 3K and sit there for a little bit, like 5 seconds max, and then fall down to 1.5k. This is pefectly normal. Once the engine warms up and gets to proper opporating temperatures, it'll drop to 700. You idle isn't messed up. Infact, it's absolutely perfect. You have nothing WHAT-SO-EVER to worry about with your idle. It's all good.

Actually, a perfect idle is 750 RPM per factory specs. 700 will cause the engine to run a little rough.

Christi: I assume your idle goes down to around 750 after the car is completely warmed up? If so, then everything sounds fine.

Adjusting the TPS cannot hurt. Search the forum for "TPS adjustment" and you will certainly find several different procedures. My choice is to adjust via an ohmmeter. The TPS rarely goes bad, usually it is just out of adjustment...

Poor mileage could be do to any number of things. Bad spark plugs or wires, clogged filters, leaking injectors, vacuum leaks, bad/improperly adjusted TPS, bad AFM, bad FPR, bad O2 sensor, etc. etc. etc.

Well, it only idled at 750 once, or around there, and I even thought it was too low. I'm used to an RX Subaru idling a bit higher than that.... After that first time of idling so low - it never got back down there, now.. it normally stays around 800-1.5k. Normally 1.5.... So, I'm not sure.

TPS or vacuum leak. Also, in rare cases your thermowax can be stuck, but that doesn't happen often.
