Vibration..?

Ok, s4 tII- when i am cruising in 5th gear at 70- i have this pulsating-vibration, if that makes sense. It also wibrates alot under 4th and 5th gear acceleration? I can feel it most in the shifter?

I would guess the driveshaft is out of balance? I haven't a clue, unless the bad pilot bearing would cause that?

Thanks guys

Check the drive shaft... If you dont know how... get under the car and move the pivot joints around to see if the bearings are still good. If they have freeplay then you've found your vibration... i had this problem to. i picked up a new driveshaft for $50 and its a breeze to install... good luck

50 bucks is what i paid for mines on a 90 gxl wit 108,000 miles from a junkyard..not bad... install is easy if u dont have the stock exhaust in the way.. the only problem with these driveshafts is that u cant replace the u joints.. u have to buy the whole freakin shaft... anywayz .. i think your problem is the rear u joint on the driveshaft.. i use to vibrate.. at highway speeds.. mostly 40 and up.. and really bad in 4th and 5th gear

A little caution with a self test of the drive shaft. Manually twisting may not diagnose bad U joints. They can vibrate prior to the common "Clunk" when first shifting into lower gears (rear U joint).

Had a vibration in shifter and steering wheel at higher RPM is high gears (front U joint). Eventually got worse at lower RPMs and then started in lower gears as well. New drive shaft and all is cool now.

ok I'm thinking on buying one, my problem is the same vibrates but! I have a new problem beside that vibrates It makes a weird sound like crounching metal now I don't know if that sound comes from the driveshaft or the tranny, first I thought that my clutch went south so I rebuilded the clutch flywheel and alll that stuff except for tranny b/c its in good condition, well that sound still there and always do it alot when I go backwards and sometimes while I accelerate foward does anybody expiernce this? b/c I'm bout to get a driveshaft to replace it and see if thats the problem.
thx

Please elaborate on this "clunk".

Often times, when I'm rolling (slowly), and I put the gearshift into 1st gear, I'll get a pretty good clunking noise, and I can feel it, also.

I also have TONS of driveline slack, which could also be a crappy U-joint somewhere... So I guess maybe I have now two signs that the driveshaft (and maybe axles, too) are bad?

I have a "clunk" also. In a recent post there was an "fc noise dictionary" My clunk is if i brake hard, once the car comes to a full stop, and begins to settle....clunk!

My driveshaft just vibrates to all hell at a 70 mph cruise- Made a bottled soda flat in 45 minutes I also noticed when cleaning my wheels, they look like they had a date with a curb, at about 25mph Two of them have quareter sized dents, so i am sure their balance is shot-

around what rpm are you dropping into first from JGard, ??? i have my daily beater ford escort gt (eh fun car i guess) and the freakin second gear's about to go out, so i have to shift from first to neutral and let the speeds even out and then shift to second to avoid too much gear crunching, eh

oh yeah i had some interesting vibration too, but that was when i first bought my FC and was taking it home, the suspension was shot like no other

I got my FC friday night!

This thing has every known problem of an FC i think-
Suspension is wasted, I have thunks, clunks and clanks everywhere. I have the wondeful smell of fuel, the sloppy shifter....and so on!
The good thing is......it runs great, no hard starts when cold or after i ran the **** out of it (making sure it could handle a little hard driving) All the electirlcal is in great shape, except sunroof and windows, they are slow! Even the cruise control works.

All in all i think once i fix all the routine stuff, give her a good tune up and some love and she will be great. Then i can start putting on the upgrades!

It'll usually be at idle, and I'll be rolling along at around 5-10mph. Only in first gear, and only occasionally. It feels just like my motorcycle when I'm sitting still, then pull in the clutch and click it down into first...
