'Vert Difference Questions

I currently own an '89 'vert that was an auto and at some point in its life had a totally ghetto 5 speed swap done to it. I've been rectifying that issue and it has been taken care of the most part. I've moved on to replacing a few body parts and just purchased a '91 'vert automatic for a parts car.

I've noticed a couple of differences and am curious if it is just factory option differences or ????

'89: The control for the top is located on the drivers console on the right hand side between the windshield wiper control and the hazards. The cruise control is the little flip switch to the right of the steering wheel. The center console has controls for speakers, power windows, and a security button.

'91: The control for the top is located in the center console along with power window and speaker control. The cruiser control is a button between the hazards and windshield wipers.

Is there a "right and a wrong" here or just factory options? Can provide photos.

Thank you.

My '88 also has them in the same position you've described for the '89. I havent seen a '91 so i dont know about that, but id imagine it is stock, just b/c it would be very hard to hook something like that up and make it look stock otherwise

Ok, the 89 was an S5 as far as drivetrain goes, but shared many features with the 88 model including some of the electrical. The 90 and 91 (92's were merely 91's sold as 92's) had airbags and different switches.

I think that you will find the official separation as follows: S4(88's) S5 without airbag (most 89's maybe some 90's); S5 with airbag (maybe some 89's 90,91 92).

Icemark is the real expert on this and if he sees fit to correct this, then thanks in advance.

Yeah, my 91, the control for the top is in the center, and it has the perforated leather on the doors.

The locations between the switches changes between the S4 and S5 convertible models.

The S4 top control switch is located by the wiper control switch and hazard button, on the right hand side of the guage cluster console.

The S5 control switch is located in the center console.

The cruise control is located on the plastic console of the gauge cluster surround on an S4 and the cruise control switch to turn on the Cruise control is where the old location of the top controls used to be on the S4 and all other controls like Coast/accel are on the right side of the steering column behind the steering wheel...

The door panels are different and the door speakers are located in different locations.

I think that is the most of it though. everything else is basically the same considering the differences between S4 and S5 models, like the gauge clusters, motor, suspension, body and so on...

To the OP I think your car may be an 88 sold as an 89 because all of the things you listed are from the 88 S4 model... like mine

My friend, you have an S4 model. You are passing incomplete and therefore incorrect information to the original poster. Then you draw a conclusion/guess based on bad information. Sheesh!

There are two versions of the S5 and you do not know this. You also didn't pick it up from my earlier post. This does not help the OP and it also makes for permanent erroneous info on the boards.

Guessing (especially when you guess wrong) does not help anyone.

The car is tagged (in the door) as an 06/89 model...so I'm calling it an '89 =)

That being said...it seems to be setup like an '88...but it has the S5 tails, blah, blah.

Oh well...I love it and it runs great...what more could one ask for (except a turbo vert).

Ouch... I stand corrected... lol

Well... I'm not gonna lie... I didn't know that 89 shared things with the 88, and I did miss what you posted earlier. My apologies if I mislead anyone.

And... It wasn't guessing, I just put up what I thought was right....

I've owned 2 different 89 verts and they both had perforated door panels. My father's 90-91 (don't remember which) also has perforated door panels.
