Underbody rust-proofing
I'm purchasing a 90 RX7 from a dealership and made a deal to get free underbody rust proofing. (That tar-like substance.) The underbody is very clean and rust-free at the moment. Do you guys think this is a worth while option or should I be looking for something else? I would like to keep it as rust free as possible but I am not too familiar with the substance used to do this and am unsure whether or not it will have any negative side effects such as hampering future modifications. Thanks for the help.

They're probably going to spray something on like 3M's Rubberized Undercoating. Actually, I'm positive they'll use that because that's what my dealer uses. If you're going to let them do it, insist on watching them mask off any bolts, electrical connections, brake lines, mounts, etc. You want it on the car, not your accessories.

Actually, what they would do is better than nothing at all but a substance which is acrylic in nature would work better for it would create a harder barrier while improving the sound deadening qualities significantly. There are a couple of products out there you could choose from which can be sprayed or brushed on. Their names are "Quiet Coat"(don't know the manufacturer) and "Spectrum" from Second Skin Audio(secondskinaudio.com).

Something like Krown that can get into the cracks will do a better job then a rubber undercoating, though an undercoating is is certainly a step in the right direction. It will not only help prevent rust but also deaden noise and help stop rattles.
If you are insane, you can coat the underside in POR-15 but this requires a significant commitment.

If you read his info on using the por 15, this statement gets even funnier! I read it when i was (still am) dealing with rust on my verts underside. I relly like the eastwood rust stuff. Prboblem is you can't get it in brush on, which is probably easiest for the underside.
