Trying to crank

Well, first of all, its an 88 n/a, auto. I don't know how long she has been sitting up or even the last time she ran. The last inspection sticker was in 06, so im assuming it was then... I have a brand new battery in her, i tuned the key to try and start it and all she does is act like the starter wants to turn the flywheel but its not giving me any results. I don't know if i just need to pull the motor or try and turn the crankshaft and see if she will turn over. Please loan me any info as to what i can check for. She is good on all fluids and only has 125,482 miles on the odo. Thanks ahead of time for your time to read and answer.

Trey

Yeah. Just reach down there and grab the front pulley with the car out of gear and see if you can turn the motor.........or not, to see if it'st the starter or the motor locked up. Won't take you more than five minutes right now.

check out if the starter is wired properly.
Should have the ground wire bolted to the trans, and both power wires to the start on the same side (opposite side of the short wire)

The oldest method know to RX7 tree shade mechanics, to find out if there is spark...........try starting the engine and while the engine turns over look at the tach needle to see if its making small bumps up/down when the engine is turning over. Can't have tach action unless at least the trail coils are both functioning.

Another method is to grab a spare CAS and connect the wiring harness to it. Then key ON and spin the bottom gear of the CAS while watching for spark at one of the lead coil wires AT the coil assy. Just pull the sparkplug wire out a 1/16" and you would see spark as the CAS was spun plus you'd hear the snapping of the sparkplugs as they fired.

ENGINE fuse and EGI fuses must be good for spark to occur.

Crank angle sensor. Its driver side on the front plate. Looks like a canister.

Like I said...........ENGINE FUSE and EGI fuse(s).

Factory Service Manuals are free and online on this sites FAQ thread.

The fuse box covers showing what fuse is which is shown in the FAQ thread. Engine and EGI fuses are shown there.

Don't bother telling us whether or not your tach needle moves when you try to start the engine. I just write on this forum to exercise my fingers.

Well, i found out i don't have any spark for the lead igniter... so now, ima try and find a used one and see if that works, but if not, ima just buy some new ones from mazdatrix and whatever else ima need. Ima check the fuses also and the CAS along with the fuel pump and filter. BTW, should i hear the fuel pump kick on when i cut the key to accel? or not?

The 15 amp Engine fuse and the 40 amp INJ fuse are both necessary to power the coils so if either were bad it would not be possible for the coils to have power in a normal situation. W/key to on, the Black/Yellow wire at the leading coil will have battery voltage if both fuses are good.

Did you check the Black/Yellow wire at the leading coil for voltage w/key to on? Either the fuses are good or they are not and a continuity test takes but a few seconds to verify one way or the other (visual test means nothing). Also, if the coil/igniter is not grounded properly via being bolted to the fender, they will not fire as well.
