Trans Stuck to Engine!
Trans Stuck to Engine!
So yesterday I pulled the motor and trans out of my car to start the rebuilding process once more. Everything went smooth entil I tried pulling the trans off of the motor once out of the car. I took every nut and bold off of the bell housing but it wont even budge. I do remember the alignment pins being relatively tight when putting the trans on last time, but I didnt think itd be this difficult to get off.
Anyone have any hints to separating the two?

1) stick screwdriver near one of the dowel pins
2)take hammer and have at it. slowly working ur way around.
disclaimer: i cannot be held responsible for any damage or harm you may induce upon urself or ur car parts. hammer and screwdriver included.

i broke an ear off of my bellhousing on my 3000GT doing that. The transfercase was stuck and i was using a screwdriver and a hammer.
Just be easy! The trick is to pry around the whole transmission and not just at 1 spot.

^I took the starter completely off including both bolts. I need to go get a dead blow hammer and try that method. I tried tying the tail shaft to a doorknob with yarn and slamming the door, but that didnt work well.

Even though YOU Think that there is Only TWO bolts in that area.there is Actually THREE..2 bolts hold the Starter ON,(One long one that Was attached Through the Bell Housing and rear of the Engine that held the Wiring Harness on,and another That went on the bottom of the starter,It is Smaller about 2 and a half inches Long)and there is also ONE Under the Starter.
OWND.
Yeah, I guess I couldnt see that little guy with my dim lighting in my barn. I still am having trouble breaking it free, but its cold and I was trying to di it myself. I dont think hitting the clutch fork sounds like a good idea. I will try to just muscle it off tomorrow with someone holding the motor still and making sure I pull it off squarely and levely (is that a word?)
Thanks for the heads up on the shy bolt and I hope this thing comes off tomorrow!

The transmission casing is aluminum, the engine rear housing and it's dowel pins are cast iron. Get a bit of moisture in there and they will stick.
Fire some penetrating lube between the transmission and engine, tap a few times around the bottom and anywhere you can reach with a mallet, then soak down with penetrating oil again. PB Blaster works best in my opinion. Then if you rock the transmission and engine back and forth it should start to pop free.
To avoid this in the future, a light coat of anti-seize on the mating surfaces and dowel pins helps a lot.

That bolt got me too. Tricky little bastard.
A couple whollops with a deadblow and the thing wiggled right off. Thanks to everyone for the help!
Now I need a center iron to replace the one that chunked away from the blown coolant seal. Merry Christmas!
