Your vacuum assist hose is prolly disconnected. It runs from the brake booster to the intake mani.

How do the pads look? My guess is the master cylinder is old and warn. If the vacuum assist was disconnected he would have a tough time pressing the brakes and wouldn't go the the floor.

how are the hydraulics??? no air in lines means the hydraulics are faulty. Check you pads and make sure ou get it done right away. That is unsafe and very dangerous

Downoad the FSM and buy some tools.

Did you Recently "screw with" the Hose that goes From the Brake Booster to the STEEL line that is on the Firewall?..NOTE: there IS a CHECK VALVE in that Hose.It allows the Brake booster to Do it's Job when the Pedal is Pushed,But Not allow the Vacuum of the Engine to Pull the Brakes on...Now,IF that Hose is BACKWARDS,it will Make the brake pedal Feel Hard as Hell. The Brakes will Work,But When you Want to Stop, you Really Have to Press on the Pedal...like Grab the Steering Wheel and Push your Whole Body onto the pedal.

Yes, pictures would be good. My car completely loses all vacuum assist if the engine is shut off. This would mean it has no check valve and I certainly do not see any check valve like you do on other cars. I have replaced that hose you were talking about and never noticed any check valve and am currious about the valve being inside of a hose where it could not be seen. I do not know if the brakes operated with a check valve before I changed the hoses because I had only had it about a month before I went through and changed them. My plan was to put a standard check valve from a junk yard car on it. I guess Mazda found it cheaper to put it inside the hose and save on the price and install of 2 hose clamps.

As for the problem with your brake pedal; what method did you use to bleed the brakes. The 2 man method works the best and be sure to pump the pedal between burst. Are all 4 of your brakes working? Can you see dust from all 4 wheels when you wash them with a hose? I have not messed with the brakes much on my car but I recall someone talking about 2 bleeder screws on the calipers and needing to use one inorder to bleed them properly.

Look at the Brake booster..There is a BIG RUBBER HOSE..about 1/2 inch in Diameter(about Normal FINGER SIZE) and goes from the brake Booster to the Steel Line, that is Connected On the Firewall, and runs across the Firewall..then it Goes DOWN to the lower Intake manifold,,and connects to a Nipple extension,Just on the Back Passenger Corner,by the PORT Actuators)(This is in a S4 N/A)..the Rubber hose itself,IF you Feel it,has the ONE WAY CHECK VALVE ..you can test this By Loosening the clamps.Taking off the Hose and Blowing air through it(you can use your Mouth for this,if you aren't Picky!)..The hose should Suck air From the Booster Only..so the path of air Runs from the Booster To the Lower Manifold(so BLOWING AIR should GO from the brakes to the Manifold)...If the hose Is Put on BACKWARDS,it won't allow the Booster to Get the Vacuum it needs to Assist the brakes in Being applied when you push the Pedal...That HOSE I am speaking of, is only About 5 inches in Length,is MOLDED,and Has an "S" shape to it..I hope that helps.
