So as I was getting into my 87 n/a today around noon, I pushed in the clutch and turned the key, and it just clicked. I tried again and it again just clicked. So I turned the key to the off position and then back on and it started as normal. And yes it was warmed up and all.

And later, after I had drove it twice more, I went to start it (near cold) and it did the same thing. But this time, it only clicked on the first attempt, and started on the second without turning the ignition off.

And idea's as to why it's doing this? Maybe my ignition switch? And I've replaced both the battery and starter (and alternator) with brand new ones, so I know it isn't those.

And another thing, does anyone else's seat belt light flicker on and off half the time? And if so, is there something I can disconnnect to kill the light/ sensor?

Loose battery connection will usually do a single click and then nothing, make sure you have a good connection and they are tightened down. Just touching doesn't count.

 

ignition switch or clutch switch. put a jumper on the 3 wire connector (only two wires going to it) above the clutch and see if it does it again.

 

It's got new battery connectors that are connected properly and everything.

Well at first, I thought I might not be holding the clutch in all the way, but when it happend the second time, and I made sure the clutch was to the floor. Earlier I tired starting it without pushing in the clutch and it wasn't the same 'click' sound. And where would this 3-wire jumper be exactly? Just right above the clutch pedal? Color?

Well even if the clutch is all the way, the switch could still be going bad. i put he-man strength on it and it still regularly clicked. ill get a pic of the connector after work. Its not hard to find tho, theres two connectors above the clutch pedal: one is a 2 wire with 2 wire connector, and one is a 2 wire with a 3 wire connector. Put a jumper on the latter

 

So today I started the car maybe 7 times, and it never did this. And my idiot lights did that check thing when the key is turned to on too. But anyways, I'll jumper that connector and see if it does it after that.

it seems like, after reading a million threads about this on both second and 3rd gen sections (FD's have this problem too), the best solution (if starter and battery are ok) is to use a relay to run straight 12 volts to the starter.

 

like those ghetto ebay toggle switch button ignitions?
