Angry speedometer broke

It just quit workin, needle dropped to zero, has stayed there all evening. Coming home from work, I hear a clanging, like I'm dragging something. Yep, sure enough, dragging a heavy duty cable with some piece of metal on the end (its dark, I cant describe it visually) the piece of metal is about the size of a socket (off a socket wrench)

I'm pretty sure its the Speedo cable?? right?? and can I fix it??

Just replace it , there is always one on ebay for sale cheap, but I would try to fix it first, but it may just break again.

Congratulations your speed meter cable broke. Call your nearest Mazda (or Victoria British) dealer and order one, it will set you back around $50 and 30 min - 1 hour to replace it. I'm on my second one without counting the one that came with the car

One trick you can do with it... Buy a new speedo cable, take it out of the housing, and just feed it into the old housing... Then put it on the tranny, tighten the hell out of it, and BAM! You're done. It takes about 3 minutes to do it this way. That's how I did mine.

Same thing happened to me however when I got home I just reinstalled it and it worked, unless something is broken it might have just been loose and fallen off. If thats the case you might as well pull the metal cable out and lightly grease it. Then just run it back through and you spend nothing. From the sounds of it, it sounds like it just got loose and fell off.

That won't work, the stock cable won't come out from the housing.

Well, mine worked fine, I hit a bump, it stopped working, and when I got home, I saw the housing dragging on the ground, and guess what? The cable was no where to be found. The cable will come out of the housing, trust me on this. If his is still in the housing, then sweet, he can put it right back on... But if it's been ripped out like mine was, then you buy the cable from the mazda dealer, take it out of the housing, slide it up the old housing, and voila! I just did this to my car two months ago, and that's exactly how I did it.

I just tightened it back up, doesnt work, the housing looks pretty beat up from it getting drug around (through 2 races too, I was beating a BMW when it fell off, then raced a camaro shortly after, beat him too )

I'll probably pull it off again and see what I can do with the cable, if I cant get it working, I'll get a new cable and do it. Thanks for the help guys. Anybody else have this problem??

When you looked at it before you tightened it back up, was the cable still in it, or was it just an empty housing?

I try it and it didn't work. The cable has two connectors, the one that goes to the tranny and the one that hooks into the speed meter. Both of this connectors are larger than the housing itself........

At least on both Mazda OEM cables.

From the tranny side, you should see a flat washer with a 1/8 of metal (male) coming out from the center of the washer. That 1/8 of metal (male) is what goes inside of the tranny (female) itself.

I saw the lil metal washer thingy, dont remember if anything was sticking out of it, but I didnt look, and if its that short I could've easily not noticed it. I didnt know what I was looking for when I put it back on there. When I look at it tomorrow I'll know now, thanks for the help guys, its greatly appreciated. (if you want to read those race stories theyre in the kills section)
