Speedo cable question.

Is the speedo cable the same for an auto and five speed? Thanks.

DAMMIT. Can anyone confirm this? Because we all know that Mazdatrix is sorta whack on their "what parts are interchangeable" factor.

No they are not. If you are changing from an auto to a 5-sp take the gear from the five peed and exchange it for the one in the auto.

Sorry, what does that mean exactly? That I'll read speed, but it'll be off?

He (rotorman85) is talking about the speedo gear, not the cable.

The manual tranny speedo CABLE is longer than the auto tranny cable.

So no, they are not interchangable for that reason.

And Jays83gsl, please fix your signature before it is deleted. 6 lines of text is all you are allowed. Your signature is 3 times that. Fix it before it is deleted.

Ok the plug that the speedo screw's into there is one bolt. Unscrew it and the whole thing pull's out of the transmission. They are the same for both the auto and 5-sp but the little gears are not the same. If you leave the 5-sp cable plug left in your tranny when you do say a 5-sp swap your speedometer will be off because the rear is a 3.909 on an auto and on a manual its a 4.10. Its been awhile since i did it but all that info is in the archive under auto to 5-sp conversion.

Sorry about the sig, I just add on sometimes without realizing it. I'll fix it ASAP

The situation is, I have a five speed that needs the bolt thing. I have an auto tranny bolt thing. So, I can just take the bolt thing from the auto tranny, use it in my five speed, and just be a few MPH off?

The bolt thing as in were the cable screws into the tranny? If so and the car has alway's been a manual then yes it will work. But yes it will be off somewhat.
