Smoke at startup?
Hello everyone.
Well my car is in hybernation mode and is not being driven untill next spring. Im starting her up once a week and driving her around a little but at every start up im getting a lot of blue smoke along with a very rich smell of gas. I know this has to do with my mods but i just need to know whats going on cuz im dont want anything to happen to my baby. What can i do to help her out.
Thanks.

It's not normal. Something is leaking oil into a place that it can come into contact with combustion. Otherwise, they'd be smoking at the dealership, and no one would have bought one.

I mean it's "normal" for a rotary to do this later in life when the oil control rings start leaking.....thanks for being a smart ***, This happens quite often when these cars get miliage on them. That was all I meant.....Lots of rx-7's do this.....It's not going to kill the car is all.......

Mine does this sometimes too, with only 40,000 miles on the original motor. I think mine is two fold. First, I've started the emissions removal, but haven't finished it, so mine starts smoking after it idles a while and then goes away when driving. I think it's building up too much pressure and blowing past the seals. I'll see what happens when I finish everything up and have stuff properly capped or vented.
Second, I think the OMP rod could be not closing all the way (or remaining oil in lines) and when you fire it back up, the oil that was left in the injectors drips into the combustion chamber and burns off at start up. This is most likely your problem. Switch to premix and ditch the OMP and see what happens.

When I had my NA, it had 70K on the original motor too and it would smoke on startups too. I used to start my car once a week since I come home from college on the weekends. After a few minutes of warming up, there was hardly any smoke.

not to high-jack the thread... but mine will smoke after high rpm's on decell. i know its not the turbo cuz the intake tubing isnt covered in oil. oil seal??? but yes allmost all our cars do that but if its a verry crappy smell try taking your charcole canister off and shaking it. it may be full.

Smoke at high RPM's is typically the oil side seals going, that's what my '79 GS did but lasted for years like that, never drove it real hard though. Over 4000 RPM with 20w-50w oil would do this and go through oil real quick. Rotary Beat suggested going to the 10w-40w to minimize this.
While we are are the subject, in the off season I let my '88 vert sit about 3 weeks between starts. Is this too long, anyone think the seals are drying out because of this?

Ok well maybe i should have asked how do i fix this problem because this is really what i wanna do. During the summer when i was actually driving my car i never had smoke unless it got really cold. Its seems to only do this when it sits. So what are some fixes for this condition besides the premix idea?? Also please check my mods because my car is now far from stock and my fuel controller is not yet tunned.
Thanks again.
Thanks again.

My TII does does the exact same thing. It would usually shoot out white smoke on startup (usually after it sat a while, and when cold). But now its smoking in high RPM during acceleration.
Just goes to show how similar each rotary acts and responds as it gets up in miles (current 133k)
