smoke question...

What color is smoke from oil being burnt up? I seem to be losing oil somewhere and I have quite a bit of smoking too.

Usually a light blue color and you can usually smell the oil burning if it is really bad.
Hope this helps you out.

Ya well I am going to look to see what color it is. It does smell, kinda like gasoline but a little bit different. Could it be the oil? I kinda hope so, I think its better to be burning it out instead of leaking.

Is this for the TII? Check your intercooler for oil, if there's a coating, it could be the seals in the turbo. I'd check there first before presuming that you have internal leakage (for positive thinkings sake). Have you cleaned the engine and looked for oil line leaks?

No to tell the truth I haven't had much time to look. I took off school today and work so I think I am going to change the spark plugs like I have been meaning to do and look for a leak. Now do I have to take off the intercooler? How hard is this? Look to see if there is any oil in there or what? Thanks alot.

Removing the intercooler involves:

1. removing 4 bolts that hold the IC in place
2. phillips screw clamp loosen on the in/out hoses of the IC
3. removal of hose going into the back of the IC (near firewall), it's on the S5, dunno about the S4s.

Just swipe your finger in the inlet side and see what you get. A film isn't bad. If your finger comes out coated, that's bad. Another way to see if it's your turbo, is boost. Get up to 40 in 3rd gear and floor it. Check your rearview or have someone follow you. If there is smoke coming out as your accelerating, then it's the turbo. If there's smoke coming out when you let off the gas (no brake) and slow, then it's worse (engine).

Ok, the inlet side is the left side when facing the car, correct? Oh ya I meant to ask this the other day when changing my oil...what is the nipple that is right next to(kind of closer to the firewall) the oil filter? It is bare with no hose running to it and was wondering if I am missing something. Thanks.

Yup, you can follow it from the compressor

Ok, I rubbed my finder in there and it came out clean. What I did find though was the tube coming from the back on the intercooler on the same side, well the "nipple" it goes to is broken off in the tube. What does that go to?

Got a digi cam? Can you circle something in a pic if I post it? What end of the hose?

Nope, no dig cam. Well if you have your hood open and are looking at the engine from straight on, there are 2 small hoses leaving the i/c on the left side on the very back, one on top of another. Well the top one has a hose that is around 4" long and goes into some small black cylinder that is mounted on the intake manifold and then has another hose leaving that same black cylinder. Well the nipple that is supposed to be attached to the cylinder has broken off and is still tightened up into the hose leaving the i/c.

Most people will tell you the smoke will have some tinge of blue in it.&nbsp I've seen oil smoke that has come out BLEACH WHITE out of my exhaust.&nbsp The only way to tell if it's oil smoke is to get a whiff of it.&nbsp If it smells ACRID, it's oil smoke.&nbsp Coolant smoke will smell "sweet."

Now, you wanna track down what is causing the smoke.&nbsp Try do a 4kRPM high idle test for oil control o-rings.&nbsp With the trans in neutral, rev and hold to 4kRPM for about 15 seconds.&nbsp Do you get smoke out the exhaust?&nbsp If you do, your oil control o-rings are gone.&nbsp Nothing short of a rebuild will fix it...

Hmm, I will try that. My car tends to smoke most of the time though so I wouldn't doubt it would smoke then. Could it be the OMP or anything else?

Oh ya do you know what the hose goes to from the i/c? Thanks.

That hose is for some bypass valve, either Air Bypass Valve or something similar.&nbsp The damn car runs like 4 different bypass valves, so it's a bitch to keep track of them all.

I would recommend to pull the solenoid with the broken hoses and cap off the fittings on the engine (BAC valve?) and IC so they don't leak...

Ok. Well I did the 4k rpm thing and well it was cold so it smoked right when I started it up and did for a few seconds while at 4k. Kind of died away mostly though. Should I wait and try this when its all warmed up though?

Agreed, never take it over 3K when cold. Some goto 3.5K, but I play it safe.
