Smog check failed? (ignition timming?)

Friend bought a FC the other day. its an 87 sport.

Car passed the sniffer test but failed on the following:

FAIL Gas Cap funcitonal
FAIL Ignition timing:
Pass Wiring to sensors
N/A Fillpipe Restrictor

Now the gas cap is obvious.. But WTF is with the is the fail for ignition timming? Isnt the FC controled by the ecu using the CAS to know when to fire the coils? how can this be off?

Thanks for any input.

Have you hooked up a timing light? try that first. Your idle has to be right around 750 or they will not pass you. As well, they may have put it on the wrong wire, happens every other year when I take my car in for smog.

the ECU does adjust timing accordingly, that is, assuming the base timing is set properly. take a look at the CAS, see the bolt on the housing with a slotted groove? that is how the timing is set.

hook up a timing light to your leading coil #1 rotor spark plug wire, set the idle to spec. set the timing light to 0 degrees advance if it an adjustable timing light and point it at the e-shaft pulley and adjust the timing by loosening the CAS clamp bolt and turning the CAS until the YELLOW mark lines up with the pointer and tighten down the CAS clamp bolt.

I had to replace the gas cap also but, he told me before it would fail so I could buy one(from him). I did watch him have trouble checking the timing for a while. I guess the MSD CDI box's multiple sparks at idle on the leading coil confused him for a while before he used a trailing coil wire.

haha.. your smog results are similiar to mine.. gas cap-10 bucks... ignition timing.. bought a 30 dollar light.. its really easy like karack discribed... timing on my car was way off so its not like its impossible for that to be it.. good luck!
