Slow accelleration......low top speed......help
I have a 1988 RX-7 SE. It is automatic. It has really slow accelleration and it feels like it has a governor. The accelleration is really bad........like 0-60 in 15 seconds........1/4 in like 22........there has got to be something wrong. It is pretty much stock except for a flex fan, low temp stat, 16" wheels and a apc cone filter. and for the top speed..........it hits 84 MPH and it just stops accellerating......it just stays there like its frozen.....the tach don't move either.....frozen........someone help me pleaze......i only had the car like a month......thanks guyz

Get rid of the ricer filter firs of all. K&N or APEXi are the best IMO its an auto so yes you are doing what is the NORM from that kind of car. I seem to remember the auto tranny has a kickdown feature that keeps you in 3rd?(not the last gear I am guessint its a 4 speed) so your limited by the gearing. there are NO governers on RX-7's

First off,
As much as I hate to say it, the autos are slow..Period. The N/As are slow enough, but then add an auto tranny to it, and you got a slug. What the actual performance figures are for the 88 with an auto are, I dont know, but you should be able to exceed 100 MPH.
So with that said, When was the last time you gave it a tune up?

Hi,
I have an 88 GXL auto. The 1st month or so after buying it, I had the same problems with slow acceleration and top speed. I tried some Slick 50 FUEL treatment and that seemed to really wake up the car. I now can easily hit 100, and the acceleration is greatly improved. I have not tried to top it out yet. I hate the auto and when it begins to give me trouble I plan on changing it over to manual. I have not experienced the prevouis posters auto tranny kickdown feature. I bought the car last April, and have put on 16,000 miles and it seems the longer and harder I drive it, the better it runs.
Good luck,
Randy

I'd go with the clogged cats. A decent mechanic can check your exhaust back pressure for an indication.
Cats glow red when there are too many unburned hydrocarbons in the exhaust. After a while of doing then... Then they clog
Check to make sure the secondary injectors are coming on line.
Fuel pressure...
the basics first.
