Rearends???

Hey, I have an 86 base model RX7 that I got a hold of for a good deal

Its an M5 model...I was wondering if you guys could tell me a bit about the rearend in it. What kind of abuse can it handle? What gears does it have in there stock?

I am planning to ditch the rotary thats in it now(its siezed...got the car for free) and put an LT1 in it. Would it be worth it to upgrade to the larger TurboII rearend? They had a larger one right?

Thanks

Should be a 4.10 open diff.

If you plan on breathing on the LT1 any, I'd put the TII diff in. Same ratio and also LSD, but has a larger ring gear. If you do this, you'll need the axles as well. Also note the pinion flange bolt pattern is different. This may be pertinent when it comes time to get a driveshaft done up. Also I'd stick the 5 lug suspension on it to get the bigger rotors and better calipers.

Hope you're using a T56 and not a 4L60E. I still miss my old LT1 Z28

I would be using a T56 for this project. My Z28 is an Auto. I plan to roadrace/autocross the RX7 a bit. And maye show up at some import shootouts with it to scare some people

After I build a forged motor for my Z, I plan to pull its stock engine out and do a little porting of the heads and put a cc306 cam in it and toss it in the RX7. Maybe throgh a 150 shot on it if it ever sees the strip.

I just noticed that Granny's makes a bolt in 9inch rear for these things...hmmm

So what all do I need for the swap and where is a good place to get the parts for it if I go to a TurboII rearend. They use the 8inch gears right? What all do I need to go to the 5 lug suspension? Would you go with that all around or just the rear? Which cars came with 5 lug setup and the 8inch gears? Only turbo II's? Maybe I can poke around the local junkyards for some parts...

Might just put a LSD in the rear I have now and see how long it holds up for...

What am I thinking...my Z isnt even done yet and I am looking into spending more money...argh

I have a 87 TurboII
What type is my rear end
I heard I can change it for
faster accleration but less top speed
I think I only leave one track when peeling out
but I have never ripped some big ones off
and my clutch just went out
If I spin one tire the other one goes the same way
I heard it was they turn oppisite with LSD.

first off lay off the drugs... GOOD GOD MAN!

you can get a higher differential gear ratio to give you better acceleration, but you'll lose top end. Agent_D has a 5.12 gear in an open diff and he's at like 3800 rpms at 55 or something crazy like that.

all Turbo IIs came with LSD. ALL. and what you said about the test. if you jack the car up and put it in neutral with no brakes on, and spin one wheel, if the other spins the same way, LSD, if it spins the oposite, no LSD.

Higher gear ratio= lower numerically. A 5.12 is a low gearset.

You ahve LSD, but it's more than likely it has worn out and is now shot. I have heard they only last 30,000 miles...

Let me get this right...you want to swap out the stock engine and put a Chevy LT1 in there...&nbsp Then you want to go to some import shootouts and scare some people...you planning on physically threatening them at the race?&nbsp Are you planning on TRYING to race at one of these things?&nbsp Last time I checked, you need and motor that MATCHED the manufacturer to at least enter in one of these things.&nbsp One look at your Chevy V8 swap, and you're going no where.

I just noticed that Granny's makes a bolt in 9inch rear for these things...hmmm
Yeah, you realize the stock rear end is IRS?&nbsp Gonna swap to a live axle and go "roadrace/autocross"...boy, what an upgrade.

So what all do I need for the swap and where is a good place to get the parts for it if I go to a TurboII rearend. They use the 8inch gears right? What all do I need to go to the 5 lug suspension? How old are you?&nbsp Seriously?&nbsp Still in high school?&nbsp Did you even graduate high school?

I don't know where you got "8inch gears", but you're not going to be swapping out some kinda of domestic ring and pinion into the stock rear diff and expect it to all drop in...

Go away, shoo...

according to Granny's website:

...The 2nd gen RX-7s used a 7" ring gear as well (with the exception of the Turbo II and GTUs cars, which used a larger 8" dia. version), but have a unique long pinion shaft (not interchangeable with the 1st gen RX-7 gearsets).

Thats where the 8 inch came from.

I said I was planning to autocross...but the thought of a 9inch and wheelies sounds tempting to me.

I have seen V8 conversion cars at Import shootouts before. Maybe I will enter my camaro this year. Its built in CANADA. See what they think of a twin turbo V8.

Have you ever been to a race track even? Do you know anything about cars? How old are you? I didnt come here to be flamed by a moron.

Thanks

Race track - 1/4-mile or road race?
1/4-mile - Hawaii Raceway Park, Sacramento Raceway, Palmdale, Pomona
Road race - Laguna Seca, Thunderhill

Do you know anything about cars?
I have been accused of that.&nbsp See my .sig...

How old are you?
33, how about you?

Famous last words...
You come here mouthing off about a V8 swap and making fun of import shootouts, and you expect no backlash?&nbsp This IS an RX-7 forum.&nbsp Or did your clumsy fingers misstype for the Mercury Cougar XR-7 Forum?&nbsp Come on bitch, how old are you?

I didnt come here to start trouble. I meant no offense about the import shootout thing. The last one I went to, the most impressive thing I saw there was an old 280Z with a ford V8 in it running 10's on motor. Thats why I wouldnt mind going out to one with my RX7.

I just wanted some info on RX7 rears and you jump on my case when I mention about 8 inch rears...so your rearend doesnt have a gear thats round in it with a diameter? Must be some kind of crazy car. Any response to this? I notice you left out a reply to that part of my quote.

I am 22 and graduating with a degree in computer engineering in a month since you wanted to know.

I came in here hoping to see some gurls butts and I find Joe bob Jim, disrespecting us. This forum is for people that love the RX7 and we treat each other with respect that respect what we love. Your are talking about making a mutant. if you are going to gather info here than do it silently without dishonoring are beloved RX7, if you can't do that then please leave.
