Your acceleration in first might be due to your car in general (AT = terrible), but just do a tune up on your whole car to see if it might be other variables. As to swapping a manual in, I can't agree more. rx-7s with automatics are boring. Searching will help you along your way from auto to manual.

your car is just slow or you have a clogged cat change to a manual

Is your tranny fluid fresh and full? Sounds like it could be low.

well no one has said to do a compression test... so... do a compression test! thing #2 would be to check over the electrical system for blown fuses. my 240 (AT) blew a transmission fuse and threw it into "safe mode" meaning it was stuck in 2nd or 3rd gear.

yea i would also ignore the whole tranny till you know the engine is solid, don't go over revin that thing just to get up, but if it won't shift until warm i would say maybe a filter, shouldn't change fluid if you have no proof it was ever done or not done in the last 60k miles, on an auto trans if you go over 60k then change fluid you could risk clogging everything up, get a manual, much more fun anyway...

never seen an auto rx7 tranny, but my old chevy had no drain plug, you have to loosen the bolts and get all the fluid to one corner, then drain it into a pan, and if you just drained it it may have caused the problem, like i said auto's are picky with fluid changes...
