Side effects of a broken speedo cable.

I know that with a broken speedo cable, my odometer, and cruise control wont work. But would the power steering be messed up, as in not work all the time, and turn it self off randomly?

I dont think there is any thing else I can associate with that, as there are a rew little things wrong with the car now.

Yes on a S4 if the speedo is disconnected the power steering defaults to a limp mode

Not really. The S4 cars with power steering have vehicle speed sensing steering. The amount of steering boost is directly proportinent to the speed.

So by the time the S4 car is at around 40 MPH there is no power steering boost all.

yeah, and it doesnt do that right. sometimes the speedo works (rarely) and it will flutter up to how fast im going and shaking, but averaging the correct speed. Whether or not the speedometer is working or not the power steering will turn on or off as it pleases, along with that beep. I am hoping that putting on a new cable will stop all this non-sense.

Will the speedometer cable off my S5 n/a parts car work on my S4 n/a?

Yeah, my system decided to stop working at a few points. I would be pulling into my driveway and steering would become much more resistant than before. Another time was when i was on a long road trip and the PS alarm kept beeping (imagine haveing that going off for an hour, just gotta crank the music) Oh well, no more PS for my car

If the speedometer does occasionally work, the problem is likely to be where the cable connects to the back of the gauge cluster. Contrary to popular belief, you might be able to get away by just pushing on the cable, from the engine bay, toward the back of the car, instead of removing the gauge cluster.

Give it a push from the engine bay, towards the rear of the car, and see if you can feel the "click". THIS MIGHT NOT WORK, but it has worked for me on a handful of 7's. It takes a couple of minutes and cost nothing. Its worth a try.

Or the gear could be stripped in the transmission.

woah, I like bigdv519's idea a lot better, as bcool's post sounds reeeeelly expensive or at least a huge paind in the butt (and probably not worth it.)

Tomorrow I will go and try that thanks.

The gear on the end of the cable was fried to all hell when i bought the car, I went ahead and replaced it but my speedo only worked for 900 miles before my needle hit zero again. I haven't gone back in there to see exatly whats wrong, but it seems like my power steering has been working this whole time. Now if only i could get rid of that constant beeping I'd be ok.
