The only ones I know are cosmetic and power differences, they have different tail lights, the trim on the s4 is black as opposed to painted on the s5, the s4 LSD is a clutch type and the s5 is a viscous (if the car even has an LSD) the s5 makes more power I don't recall the exact numbers and I'm too lazy to look it up but it's like a 15-20 hp difference IIRC. There is some other stuff that I don't know or can't remember at the moment but I think you can find all the differences in the FAQ or by utilizing the search button.

Yeah i knew about the tail lights and interior. Some one told me that the ecu's were different? And reading another post there it said there were better oil cooler lines in the s5. There seems to be a heap of little things just wondering what there are.

oh yeah the OMP in the s4 is mechanical and the one in the s5 is electrical I beleive, also the aux ports on s4 n/a's are activated by back pressure from the exhaust and the s5's are activated by an air pump

What specifically are you looking for? a list, comparo, spread sheet? I can tell you officially, from Mazda's PR, HR, and HUD here in Cali all even Series are good successful platforms, but odd numbered series are doomed to fail. Repeatedly. Till the end of time. Period.

S5
- Electrical OMP vs S4 Mechanical OMP
- 10 blade mechanical fan (maybe 12...) instead of 8 (maybe 10)
- Radiator Filler is different
- ECU is different, car is very rewired
- Knock Sensors
- 9.7:1 NA and 9.0:1 TII vs S4 9.4:1 NA and 8.5:1 TII
- You already got bumpers/moldings
- Intake Manifolds are different, I know for sure N/A has VDI
- N/A Aux Ports 'pull' to open instead of S4 'push'
- Rotors are lighter then S4 (Therefore flywheels are different)
- S5 is GTUs vs S4 GTU
- S5 irons are supposedly beefier in one little important spot
- S5 Aluminum Housings have different Spark location (I think leading is a bit lower)
- I THINK primary ports are a bit different. (The ones on the middle iron)
I'm sure there are others, I am certainly not an expert.

They cut cost on s5s, the quality is just not the same. Crappy auto seatbelts, plastic sway bar links, steel rim for spare tire, steel jack instead of aluminum, terrible wiring, heavier car, fill point for cooling system isn't at the highest point like s4's and the upper water pump neck is plastic, RPM sensitive power steering instead of speed sensitive like s4's warning light surround doesn't look like it fits just right, no grey interior option, ackward shirt ****, water temp gauge is useless . . . there's more and i'm forgetting it, i've owned 1 s5 and 3 s4's i prefer the s4's no matter what, its easier to put s5 taillights and trim on an s4 than to try and fix all that bull$h!t!

I know for a fact that there has GOT to be at least 500 threads on this topic somewhere. I see about two a month at least! Anyway's, maybe we can get a MOD to sticky this "coveted" information. Maybe someone needs to start an official thread. I totally agree that the S4 is as good as an S5 in almost every way.
My 87 has never been outrun with a n/a S5. I have had 3 FC's, 2 S5, 1 S4. I kept the 4, but I would prefer the S5 turbo over the TII.

That would make it easily accessible to the noobs, and a refresher for the veterans. There is a truckload of info in the stickys that Icemark put at the top of the 2nd gen forum, that is all it lacks. Include little things like the fact that the S4 has a 2 spoke steering wheel and the S5 has three.

IMO s5 look better hands down int and ext. But everone is forgetting although it was a heavier car the 89-91 had better performance 160hp vs 138hp NA 182hp vs 200hp turbo
86-88 offered non power racks
FYI engine speed sensing is better

wikipedia has got some of the technical changes and history but alchemist has covered it for the most part, you just have to look at the cosmetic differences to see which ones you prefer. If there was a weight gain im sure it was minimal compared to the power gain.

You must have forgotten that the S4 n/a has 146, not 138.

Ok well for us noobs i think this site really needs a sticky thread with all the differences listed. I have had my car for over a year now and i love rx7's but ive never really seen the information anywhere. If there was a comparison chart it would make it easier for people to decide between an s4 or s5. I keep hearing lots of little bits of info from reading threads (ie s5 has better oil cooler lines) but never see a comparison. And once again reading that thread that you posted doesn't cover everything.
