I presume you're talking about a manual from your tagline - mine just unscrews. Grab handle at top and twist counterclockwise.

Twist it off, if you cant do it with your hands grab a pair of channel locks.

Turn the fitting just below the **** clockwise with a 22 mm (IIRC) wrench--it's a jamb nut. The thread size for the S4 is 12mm x 1.25.

There's a locking nut under the **** guys, sheesh.

The locking nut has far fewer threads on it than those in the shift **** in contact with the shifter pole. So when the two are tightned into each other, there is a lot more friction in the ****'s threads than the jam nut's. Trying to unscrew the **** while they're still tight is a great way to damage your bushings.

Ditto, though I've jumped the gun with a couple questions myself...

Rx7club was acting up on me. I hit post and nothing happened. Left for a couple hours and tried again, saw a couple extra posts and went back to edit and add the most recent one in, because I found his comment amusing.

I'm so terribly sorry for ruining your afternoon.

Nice info - I didn't know that, mine was always able to be unscrewed by hand fairly easily since I got the car. It didn't loosen itself or anything, you had to WANT it off of there, but it wasn't like stripping threads tight, either.

see i knew this thread would get tons of responses and was entirely worthwhile posting

here's my idea for the custom replacement... im gonna have a crazy marble blown for me at the local glass blowing shop up here in burlington where i go to college, hopefully they can incorporate "rx7" into it. then i'll have them etch the gear pattern into it. great idea, huh?

Use a crescent wrench. It won't chew up the jamb nut nut like channel locks will.
