replacing the shift knob

how do i get the shift knob off ? i can see the seam but as hard as i've twisted it, it doesn't budge.

also, what size are the threads? i'm contemplating having a custom replacement made...

I presume you're talking about a manual from your tagline - mine just unscrews. Grab handle at top and twist counterclockwise.

unscrew it :uh:

ithajokai 10-22-07 11:24 AM

Twist it off, if you cant do it with your hands grab a pair of channel locks.

Turn the fitting just below the knob clockwise with a 22 mm (IIRC) wrench--it's a jamb nut. The thread size for the S4 is 12mm x 1.25.

I can't believe this is a thread.

There's a locking nut under the knob guys, sheesh.

The locking nut has far fewer threads on it than those in the shift knob in contact with the shifter pole. So when the two are tightned into each other, there is a lot more friction in the knob's threads than the jam nut's. Trying to unscrew the knob while they're still tight is a great way to damage your bushings.

Ditto, though I've jumped the gun with a couple questions myself...

Delphince: look two posts above your own, and read slowly and carefully.

Locking nut? Is that on the S4 only? I didn't find one in my 91

Rx7club was acting up on me. I hit post and nothing happened. Left for a couple hours and tried again, saw a couple extra posts and went back to edit and add the most recent one in, because I found his comment amusing.

I'm so terribly sorry for ruining your afternoon.

Nice info - I didn't know that, mine was always able to be unscrewed by hand fairly easily since I got the car. It didn't loosen itself or anything, you had to WANT it off of there, but it wasn't like stripping threads tight, either.

davemo 10-27-07 11:45 AM

see i knew this thread would get tons of responses and was entirely worthwhile posting

here's my idea for the custom replacement... im gonna have a crazy marble blown for me at the local glass blowing shop up here in burlington where i go to college, hopefully they can incorporate "rx7" into it. then i'll have them etch the gear pattern into it. great idea, huh?

davemo 10-27-07 11:45 AM

a big fatass marble

hopefully they can thread it somehow

otherwise i guess ill just have a sweet ass marble that says RX7 which is worth it anyway ahaha

trochoid 10-27-07 12:36 PM

Use a crescent wrench. It won't chew up the jamb nut nut like channel locks will.

incubuseva 10-27-07 01:35 PM

It will be cool till it breaks. But will it be comfortable? Hmmmm
