Reliability Questions...

Ok as some of you may have read a few weeks ago my engine blew. I have currently 600 dollars out of my goal of 1000 dollars. My question is this.....Should I get a 13BT that has less than 100k miles after it was rebuilt. Or should I rebuild my N/A? I am a 17 yr old high school student and although I want the boost. I want some reliability. So another question is this. How long will a 13BT that was babied and has less than 100k miles last me? 1 yr maybe? Hopefully more. I will be honest and say that I did neglect my N/A because it had over 150k and I knew it would blow soon. I vowed to myself that wether I get a 13BT or an N/A I will baby the **** out of the engine. Oil Change every 1000 miles....sparkplugs every 3000 miles.....you know....the works....So Yea thats my question...should I go for 13BT or N/A?

Go turbo if you have the parts available, and the ability to change everything over. I have a S5 TII I purchased new, and it has been extremely reliable. Only trouble starting was after it sat for the entire winter in 1992.Then a cracked seal with 155,000 miles, but you will hear of others that have gone beyond that mileage with no major problems. Gotta luv the TII's. Only problem is that you may not be satisfied with the stock boost and want to creep to higher levels without sufficient upgrades. Then you may run into problems.

theas cars are vary reliable if they are taken care of, turbo or not. but a na motor will last about 25000 miles longer than a turbo

Hmm...people, please vote only if you post in the thread. I want to know the reason why you vote that way.

Thank you Turbonut and Assman20a for doing so.

Buy a JDM motor with 45-50k on it drop it in and forget about it. Also have your injectors cleaned. Proper fuel is VERY important on boosted car. To bad you missed out kevin had a TII motor he was selling that was in oustanding condition.

I know....in my N/A I used to put in 87 but i have read for a turbo its recommended that 93 octane is used. Also what is the average MPG you turbo guys get on your 7. Im not sure but I've heard that it isnt a fully stock Turbo engine. So what MPG readings am I gonna be getting? Thanks for the feed back everyone.

Rebuild the n/a. This might offend you, but it's good honest advice: There's no way a high-school student can afford to maintain a TII. The n/a is probably cooler than the cars that your friends have, and a running n/a is definately better than a TII that sits in you driveway. I'd stick with the n/a until you're old enough to get a decent paying job. (Unless your parents are better than mine ever were. Then I'd say get the TII and hit them up for money whenever it breaks.)

Actually, you could probably get a running n/a for the $1000. That would be the best choice.

ummm its been stated... b4, but
a t2 swap is going to cost alittle bit more than a grand, unless you have an entire front clip lined up right now. its also going to be a couple days of install time, and more maintenance and bug hunting for the first few months.

Lol...Its just the chassis.....could be other components as well I dont know...havent checked much else yet. But I ran a VIN check and it checked out...heres the link:

https://www.rx7club.com/showthread.php?t=352484

Lol correct me please if Im wrong in that.

Also..yearrgh I know that a high school student cant but that brings me to the last question of the day to you Turbo guys....

1) What are the most common problems that a TII engine gets that a N/A might not get
2) How often do these....and if TII engine I might get will have a TMIC which means low boost. So does that lower the chances or problems?
3)How much do these problems usually cost...whats the range cheaptest-most expensive

Thank you

-Luis

Not be be patronizing, but you're 17 so I'd lean towards the n/a engine. It just makes more sense to learn to drive something slower well/fast before you step up. I know no one wants to hear that.

Ignoring the "17 factor": For $1000 would you be getting all needed parts (manifolds, etc)? Compare that to the cost of rebuilding the n/a engine, buying new gaskets, grommets etc. for manifolds, injectors, etc. No one can guaranty that this used 13BT will last any amount of time, but if everything's kosher then you can probably expect at *least* 20k miles. I don't know that 13BT engines are less reliable than 13B engines, but they don't last as long. As for unique 13BT problems, I don't think they're that common, but at the moment I'm struggling with a massive oil leak in my turbo and I obtained a replacement that seems to have a freak internal coolant leak. Would you get a turbo with the 13BT engine and is it the only one ever used with the engine? (ie. original engine lasted 150k, engine rebuilt driven for 100k, total on turbo 250k)

I may be 17 but I've driven my share of cars even before I got my license....-=looks around for cops=- Lol....I dont mean to be braggin but yea Ive driven fast cars like once I drove a mazda MX-6 V6 at like 120mph on I-4 at like 3am.....I've driven my parents Volvo...its turbocharged....Lol....gool 'ol 4 banger with turbo...Lol its fast for an old car tho. I've driven an 95 300Z N/A...they arent slow.....i've also driven a 1995 BMW 5 series....310HP...so ya....again i dont mean to be braggin but I think for a 17 yr old I've had my share of drivin pretty good fast cars...and as I said earlier...the T engine will have a TMIC so i will be boosting low numbers....and I *think* the T engine has been rebuilt once before....the turbo...i dont know....I think it has lightnened rotors and I will not be getting just the engine for 1k....I am getting hooked up...im gettin a tripped ECU...better injectors...the lightened rotors like I said...a magnaflo catback with downpipe...I think thats all...maybe less maybe more....plus Im not like some people I know...I can control myself when driving in the street. I know when to speed but I also know especially when to not speed. And again I *think* that the T engine has less than 100k on it...Im not sure tho....

Heheh ya most likely....Lol I'll hate the fact that it'll eat up over 30 bucks a week in gas but hell what can you say....its like when you go out with a fat chick.....you gotta waste money on her *** to so she can eat....usually over $30...Lol no offense to any of you 'healthy' chicks readin this....

Edit: haha...what would suck then...going out with a 'healthy' chick while driving the Turbo....haha

i am going to do a 13b-rew swap which is a little bit more time consuming and challenging, but it will be worth it. Then ill need to ask the mods to alter my screen name.

Heheh....do mods actually change your screen name for you? I've been wanting to change mine.....Or do you have to have a reason for it?

i think i can present a good arguement, so yes a reason would be good. Like a major change in car, when you have a car specfic thing in your screen name
