Quick question...

If someone put ATF in their engine, would it make it a good idea? People do pointless and dumb things. Joining the lemmings is never a great plan of attack.
I'm not attacking you, just stating the facts. If you want better oil, switch to a decent synthetic.

Sorry, I am anti-synthetic. I don't want to deal with synthetic oil at the moment. I am only seeing if Castrol GTX was one of the better brands of oil you could purchase at most auto-parts stores.

The higher mileage part is what I was referring to.

high mileage oils typically have high levels of zinc in them that can lead to build up in the motor and on spark plugs.
No reason to use such oils on an engine that has good compression or is otherwise running fine

Why are you anti-synthetic? Cost?
ALL of the "high-mileage" oils have additives which do two main things: they prevent oil from being burnt off (we inject oil into the combustion chamber for the purpose of being burnt off- preventing this is bad), and they "stop leaks" by using a seal condition, which seeps into rubber and causes it to swell. This will not help our oil control rings, and can cause damage to them.
Those oils are meant for piston cars with leaky valve seals.

GTX is one of the best regular oils. Considering that it protects the engien just fine, I don't see the point in plopping down 3-4 times as much for a good synth oil. I might try it some time once I have more money just to see if its any better, but not for a while.
