Question about composition of Exhaust gaskets?

I am sure everyone has paid the ridiculous price charged by Mazda for the Exhaust and Turbo Manifold gaskets. I don't quite understand why they are so expensive. I don't know much about metals but it doesn't seem exotic. Is there a material we could use to create these gaskets? Or am I missing the reason why they are so expensive?

A plain old manifold gasket from Napa (~$15) has held up for many years on my car, after many removals and reinstallations of the manifold. No leaks.

88IntegraLS, was it a sheet that you cut to fit your application or did you find something that happened to fit?

I've not seen those parts listed anywhere that has been cheap. My experience is that the prices through Mazdamotorsports are not all that great...

The exhaust manifold gaskets are quite expensive, but the other exhaust gaskets (the ones that go between the cats, mufflers, etc.) are a reasonable price. I prefer to use only Mazda exhaust gaskets between the cats and mufflers, because I have constant blowout problems with generic gaskets. They only seem to last two weeks. For the turbo and manifold gaskets, you can save money if you cut them yourself out of 2MM-3MM soft copper.

I've been using some Fel-pro ones I got at Oriely for about a year now on my mufflers and Pre-silencer. They're not for an Rx-7 though.I just took my old gaskets in with me and they matched them up to some that would fit.Plus they were only about 5 dollars each.

All I know is the manifold gasket I got from NAPA looks exactly like the one Rotary Aviation sent in their 13b installation kit. Two quilted metal sheets with some kind of soft filler in between, and crush rings around the port openings. It wasn't more than 20 bux two years ago.
