Propeller Shaft AKA Drive Shaft

Hey so here is the issue at hand, I performed a full overhaul and i removed the drive shaft BUT, i did not put mating marks on the shaft and flange nor did I take note of the balance weight washers, I used regular ones

SO What Now?

I do have a vibration and I am sure this is the issue, any ideas and or suggestions on how to balance the shaft on the flange?

Iit's a one piece driveshaft. Not multiple like some SUV's and trucks.

The driveshaft rotates in a circle. If it is unbalanced in any shape or form rotating it 90 degrees to "keep it in balance" won't do any difference, it would still be unbalanced.

If the assembly is balanced it will be balanced in any way you put it in. Doesn't hurt to mark it, but think about it.

^^Agreed. I have read lots of recommendations to 'mark the orientation'. The Factory Service Manual says "Before removing the propeller shaft, mark the flanges for correct reassembly" have always done so, but....

I can't see any reason that the assembly would be more or less balanced due to the orientation of the shaft to the rear hub assembly. I have only taken 3 shafts out. I have never seen a balancing washer, only lock washers.

Are you sure the vibration is from the propeller shaft? Clutch misalignment could be your issue.

Take your drive shaft to a drive shaft shop if you want peace of mind. They can balance it of you. You may have another issue though.

When I had my diff rebuilt the shop erased my markings when they cleaned it. I had a pretty significant vibration that I thought was due to the improper orientation of the drive shaft and diff flanges. I rotated teh shaft 90* and drove.....little better. Rotated again.....got worse. Rotated again.....little better. Finally when I went to rotate it one last time, I noticed that as I rotated the shaft the flanges were not completely flush---thus causing the vibration.

At the end of the day it doesn't matter what the orientation is if your shaft is balanced. If you had balancing washers on it ....maybe, but other than that, just double check the mating surfaces. It helps to rotate the shaft as you tighten the bots to make sure you don't leave any gaps.

I've pulled and replaced my DS several times without marking orientation and never had any vibration issues.

Shaft orentation shouldn't matter at all. I've had tons of drive shafts out before. (I've had my rx-7's shaft out at leats 6 or 7 times.) I've never marked them nor have I had a problem. I'm guessing either a weight got knocked off of your driveshaft itself, or the driveshaft isn't mating to the diff flange properly due to rust or whatever. It could also be a totally different issue like tire balance or whatever.

hummm, some good points here, after reading this ^^^ I investigated further and think it may not be the drive shaft.

I was just reving the car throught the rpm band and at a dead stop and found i still have a vibration.

So now i am stumped...

Looking in motor and tranny mount replacement to eliminte that
