AZ power steering rack

so i have a 88 vert with power steering and i have a 89 parts car with power steering.
My verts rack & pinon is shot it leaks like crazy (put the wrong fluid in it).
my parts car looks like it has a non leaking rack.
I was looking at the two and noticed that they are different (rack & pump).

my s4 vert rack and pump has 2 lines going to the rack and the pump and the s5 rack only has one line coming from the pump to the rack and the other line going to the cooler up front.
also the s5 pump has a different setup and a different sensor.

can i change out my (pain in the ***) s4 power steering system for the more simple looking s5.
can i swap these 2 system out with each other???

ok never mind all that, has anyone rebuilt their rack and pinon?
I have found a kit that replaces all the old seals.
is there any special tools that are needed to do this or is it pretty straight forward?
If anyone has done this with success?

I haven't rebuilt my rack per say, but I have opened it up and depowered it. The only tool you will need is a really big adjustable wrench for the "lock nut" on the front of the rack and a vice to hold the rack while you remove the inner tie rod (can be done without vice). Once inside, all seals can be removed easily.

Go to homedepot and get this: http://www.homedepot.com/h_d1/N-5yc1...atalogId=10053

Also: http://www.flyinmiata.com/tech/depower.php

If your not comfortable with doing it, just send it out and get it rebuilt. It will come with a warantee of some sort and the cost might not be too bad.

By the way, I don't think you can swap the two different style racks as they function differently and I am sure it's through the ECU. One is engine speed sensitive, the other is vehicle speed sensitive.

I'm thinking about doing the same thing, rebuilding the rack on my S4, were you able to find the kit cheap?

AZ rack pinion

ok i have been looking around at rebuilt racks on the internet.
I found what i think is a ggod deal on a rebuilt rack for my car but im not 100% sure about what rack and pinion i have...

i have a 88 convertable rx7 with power steering.
I know its a 3 port. there is 2 lines (one big, one small) that comes from the power steering pump to the rack and one line that goes from the rack throught the ps cooler to the ps pump (return line).
so it a 3 port right?

well i call the company to see what it might cost me and he asked if it has a sensor on the rack???
I didnt see a sensor on the rack itself but i know there are two sensors on tue pump itself.

so sence i have a s4 88 convertable with power steering and a three port rack & pinion, does it have this sensor that I was asked about?
I didnt see a sensor anywhere on the rack & pinion itself.
If somebody could school me on this it would be great! I can also send pictures if need be.
lmk. thanks guys.

There are two types or rack, speed sensing, engine speed sensing. Look at the FSM and it will tell you what you have.

Look at the S5 FSM, the S4 FSM is horrible.

Did you ever install the S5 Rack in the S4? What additional things did you have to do?
I found a rebuilt s5 rack for pretty cheap so I'm curious what else the swap included.

Let me know,

- D

AZ ps

I never did man, I dont think it will work.
The power steering pumps are different.
theres a sensor on the s4 power steering pump thats not on the s5 pump....
the plugs that are on the s4 pump are different as well.
It might work if theres anybody that could let us know it would be great.
