Porting options

Well I have had so many little problems with 87 NA that i have decided to do a rebuild. She has 225,00 miles on her so she is in need of some work. This car will not be my daily driver. I originally wanted to make it an SCCA track car but I am still not sure. No matter what i do with it i want it to have some good power. I dont really have a time line or anything on this project anymore so funds really arent a big deal either.

So my question is:What porting options do I have and what do you guys recommend?

Depending on the condition on my housings and rotors etc. I may just buy new ones and not worry about the porting. But If they are usable I will consider it.

well, you'll see photos and brief descriptions of the port types in the link provided above. as for my recommendation, start with a decent streetport.

they did ... well, kind of ....

i've found that there are two schools on the monster port. one school says it's the same thing as the J-Port - and if you scroll to near the bottom of the page posted above, you should see it.

the other school refers to it as "the semi-peripheral" port - but not the semi-peripheral as we refer to it these days. it was bascially two huge ports/reliefs cut into the rotor housings in such a way that air entered the engine from the side ports and the rotor housing, in tandem. however, from the atmosphere, it was ONLY fed by the side housings. from the outside, the rotor housings remained intact. i get the feeling no one uses them any more.

as it was explained to me, it was a way to side-step rules that banned peripheral ports. there is a photo floating around this board, but i can't remember which forum it was that i saw it. however, i know for sure there was one posted by Lynn Hanover over at nopistons in the engine building section.

Great info guys! Very helpful. depending on my schedule i am going to start pulling everything out today and see what it looks like. If i do end up doing it i think i will go with either a street port or maybe a mild bridgeport. More updates to come. Thanks again guys! LOVE THIS FORUM!
