I was wondering if the pilot bearing is normally replaced during any engine rebuild?

I had my engine rebuild done by rotary resurrection and I just now realized while looking through mazdatrix.com that I only gave him a new seal for the pilot bearing and not the actual pilot bearing itself.

Would he normally replace it or just use the old one ? In my mind i dont see any reason not to replace a cheap 9 dollar part, although I would be 50% at fault since I was too stupid to give it to him or ask if he replaced it when I dropped off the engine.

How long should it last if it wasnt replaced ? Is it bad to not have replaced it if he didnt replace it ?

 

Ok...heres the news Im going to give you.
1: Unless your old bearing was total crap it should still be good.
2: Its a royal p.i.t.a. to remove said bearing.
3: Chances are good that he did install a new one. I had to put one in mine when i swapped for a motor out of a car with an auto trans. I had called Kevin but didnt get an answer, a few days later when I posted my lil rant about the 12 bucks in parts that cost me 4 days of swap time i was informed he had a drawer full of em...or close to that number

 

I'll admit i was a newbie to rotary engine and i still am , but i can say you learn alot of things over time and with screwing up. I cant believe i didnt realize i gave him just a seal and not the bearing ... pretty stupid if u ask me but oh well. I just want my car to be in 150% condition so i have no worries about anything breaking. Ive already put probably over $3000 into fixing this car so far and its still not completely fixed yet and i have to get the front end straightened out since i got in a fender bender with a dumb girl that pulled out in front of me and fix a few other things too , it doesnt even have more than 300 miles on the rebuild (speedometer isnt working either since it fell off the thing on the back of the gauges so dont know how much miles)

Kevin is a good guy and has very good prices along with warranty thats why i went with him for the work. I actually met him in person when i dropped off the motor and he took it all apart in front of me.

Why dont you just ask Kevin yourself?

Also the pilot bearing is not a PITA to remove unless you are talking about pulling/reinstalling the transmission.

 

i dont know if he would actually remember the work on my engine ( if he doesnt ALWAYS replace it), and he is usually very busy

 

it's reccomended that the pilot be replaced each time you remove the tranny.. you can load up the tranny input shft and bruise the bearing race.. however it's NOT required.

 

I highly recommend it also, as a slight nick on the needle bearings on trans removal and reinstallation will cause you MAJOR grief and headache when it does fail.

I do it for my car and all my customers cars when I do pull the trans.
It's $15 in parts for peace of mind.
