pilot bearing and flywheel removal!!!

pilot bearing and flywheel removal!!!

has anyone else had problem getting the flywheel off and also had problems getting the pilot bearing to come out. if so please post (changing out clutch right now) p.s. i dont have a puller for the bearing if anyone know and tricks or tip please post.

Didn't read the last post but I took mine out with a chisel. Broke it in two and just dug it out. Took about twenty minutes. Getting the flywheel nut off takes two men and a boy unless you have a big impact wrench and a 2 and 1/8th socket.

To get the pilot bearing out shove some grease in that bitch and get the proper bearing puller needed. It shouldn't come out with too much trouble. Mine, with 145k+ on it, came out in about 5 shots.

Go to autozone and rent the puller/slide hammer. Modify the jaws on teh puller.

I had my bearing out in two blasts of the slide hammer.

if your pilot bearing is in good shape, don't mess with it!

Make sure you align the clutch disk properly too!

To remove the flywheel (have you got the big nut off?) there are two methods.

1st method, put the big nut back on about 2-3 threads, hit with a BIG hammer around the outside (not on the friction surface!) it should come off in a few pops. You have the nut on there so it doesn't fall on your face! If you don't have a big hammer, don't waste your time with a small one. You'll just get an earache and it won't come off anyways.

So then you can use method 2:
There are two threaded holes in the flywheel, put long bolts in them and start tightening them alternatley about a turn at a time once they're snug against the rear iron. This will force the flywheel to come off also. It's probably not a bad idea to have the big nut threaded onto the flywheel for this one too.

if you DON'T have the nut off yet, its 2 1/8". A big impact gun will take it off. You should use a propane torch to heat it some first though.

The pilot bearing remover from advance auto works perfectly with no modifications. As for the flywheel nut, I used the racing beat "super wrench". It worked great. Once thats off, put it back on a few turns and whack ths **** out of it with a hard rubber mallet. It will take a few more whacks than with a solid hammer, but you dont have to risk damaging the flywheel. Just bang all the way around the edge of it.
