What size is that huge bolt on the flywheel?

What size is that huge bolt on the flywheel?

Hey people,

I'm taking apart my FC engine, and just got the trans separated from the block.

What size bolt is that on the flywheel? I have to go buy a huge socket for it and was wondering if someone knew offhand what size I need to get?

I believe it is 2 1/8 inches big for SAE. I am not sure what that equates to in metric though.

Is it a Metric or Standard nut? I'm probably gonna have to call around to find one, I don't think the local auto parts stores carry anything over like 36mm.

Exact size, anyone?

I just looked in my tool chest and it is 2 1/8". You can use either that or 54 MM.

Autozone has em that you can rent, or sears, I know sears sells a 54mm.

you have to have a flyweheel puller too, and it's a pain in the butt. take it to a bazda dealership, and get someone to take it off, thats what I did

Hmm.....flywheel puller, ehh? Will my Steering Wheel puller work....or is it a different tool? Also, whats the deal with the 19mm on the front side? Is it still a "lefty loosey" nut? I attacked that thing with my impact gun, and nothing. Will a huge breaker bar work? Any tricks to getting it off easy?

heh, when i read the thread title i said "******* gigantic" outloud

but yes do what they said. if you get a long enough lever (say five feet) it's not hard to do.

769 posts and you can't use the search function? This subject has been beaten to death, both the nut size (54mm or 2 1/8 inch socket {available at sears}, fits fine) and the flywheel removal:

leave the nut on a couple threads so the flywheel does not shoot off.
Pry on one side of the flywheel and hit the opposite side with a dead-blow hammer (hit it hard).
Move the prybar to another position, and again wahck the opposite side (whack hard)
5-6 good whacks and it will pop off.

Seriously, though, search function, man.

It is covered in red loctitie from the factory, just like the flywheel nut. Big torque will loosen them (they both thread normal direction), but it is usually easier to heat them with A. a propane torch or B. MAP gas first to break down the loctite, and then loosen them.


Have you taken a look at the handy, widely available FSM?

Nope.

I've taken a look at the hundreds of tools and various Rx7 things littering my garage and parkway areas now, and found nothing that would work to even "ghetto remove" the bolts.

If it helps, I'm not trying to save the engine, or flywheel, just interested in disassembling the engine.

I do appreciate your help, but the "use the search function" demand never seems to work, so I'm not sure why people bother to throw a fit about it.

Anyways, thanks for the info, I'll have to see if I can locate some more tools tomorrow. Worst case scenario, my impact hammer will disassmble the engine for me.
