Exclamation Parents are gonna be so pissed when they come back...

Parents are away on vacation...coming back this sunday
I decided to get 2 fc's, one 90, and one 89. the one with the 89 had a blown engine...
the one that was 90 had been in a front end accident, that broke the radiator
engine in that car was sitting for a couple of months... wasnt started since accident

I moved that engine into the 89 along with the exhaust

I hooked the engine to the ecu that was on the 89

the 90 engine was hooked to an safc

I didnt know how to hook up the safc, so i just left it

the harness has the wires hooked on and such

The engine took a while to start, and when it started, it smoked everywhere

Engine ran rough, and sounded like there was a vacuum leak (I dont know how to check for leaks)
I ran the engine for 5 minutes, then it stopped smoking, but there was a big difference in reaction for throttle input.

The engine would die unless u keep revving it, i didnt rev it passed 4k

started it again this morning.. it was worse.. so i hooked up the ecu from the 90 car, and it wouldnt run

the car has since flooded and would not start

I pulled out the spark plugs, dried them up, and put them back, but car still will not start

it will turn over, but it does not start.

I've had time to clean up the mess... but the car is still dead...

I cant have my parents come back to 2 fc's infront of the house... I really need it started and running.

can anyone help me?

I'm located in richmond BC, if anyone can stop by that would also help.

thanks in advance, i think thats as accurate a description i could get.

You seem rather ambitious!

1. Unflood the car.

2. Find the vacuum leak.

3. Look for another place to live.

wait- do you live with them?
and why not have 2 S5's in the driveway? lol

Yea, I'd find the vaccuum leak first (search)
and de-flood it and spap ECU's again
and then idk... drive it somwhere else?

anyways, proejct's sound interesting... pics?

thats was maybe why the other car had a SAFC... you need it to run the engine.. he probably modded the car and need that to run

where on the FSM do I find all the vacuum hoses... I dont know which ones they are exactly... any hose from the intake?

and which ECU should I use? the one that was hooked to the SAFC? or the one that was in teh car already (thats the one that ran)
I'm gonna go out again, take some pics and post them so u get the picture.

thanks so far!

what do you mean screwed? could the engine be toast?

cause its flooding like crazy right now, the spark plugs were soaked when I took them out, I dried them up, I found that my ecu harness was hardcore messed with when they installed the safc, and they had some gauges installed so theirs wiring coming out of the harness for that too, all from the plugs...

I found one of the wires that connected the safc was cut, so i reconnected that, and some other wires that I figured out where they went, I reconnected them too...

I have to go downtown for some stuff, then Ill be back in an hour or so, I took some pics, but theyre not good... sun was too bright... so I'll take more pics... I need to reconnect some wires on the ecu...

Now... the spark plugs are out, and dry, so im gonna let them sit for a bit...

also, the egi fuse is out...

when I come back, Im gonna try and find out where the wires go

as for deflooding the car...

I plug the spark plugs in... leave the egi fuse out... and try to start the car right?

2 or three times right?

then pull the plugs out again, dry them up and put them back, plug in the egi fuse and start the car?

or am I wrong somewhere?

all help is appreciated! I hope the engine isnt toast!

you can add a little oil into the 2 leading plug holes to help build compression.

WTF, who says its compression is low? Don't do unnecessary crap, until it becomes necessary.

To unflood: put all your crap back together. Remove EGI fuse. Crank for a solid 30 seconds. Replace fuse. Start car (which will probably immediately shut off due to vacuum leak).

To find vacuum leak:
Follow the path of air. Start at the filter, and go all the way to the engine. Check everywhere there's a connection of the path of air. Intake tube, throttle body, manifolds, all vacuum hoses, etc. It's not difficult to figure out, but it is a pain in the ***.

If you're not sure how to actually check for leaks, just physically wiggle and visually inspect each connection. Typically old vacuum hoses become brittle and crack or break. If you swapped engines, you may have left something off, didn't use gasket sealant, didn't bolt intake manifolds tight enough, didn't tighten the intake hose clamp, whatever, you should get the picture by now.

i bet because the engine had an SAFC in the harness that the injectors are upgraded, thus causing your flooding problem. Just my guess, good luck you can do it, just work through it and take your time if you can.

thanks for all the comments and advise...just patiently waiting for my friend to show up with his wiring tools to hook up the SAFC properly, I cranked the engine with the egi fuse out for 30 seconds... I'm gonna wait till I properly connect the SAFC b4 I try starting it again... I've been depressed since the engine didnt run properly... but I've learnt many new lessons with this...
I hope this Rx7 isnt as cursed as my last 2 :p
I had 2 S4s...and my swaps resulted in seized engines.. cause the shell I used was cursed!!! and the people that helped me only cared about picking up the parts left from the other car...

anywhoo... will update once the job is done!

HAHAHA. i just love the fact that you bought 2 cars while they were gone... thats a true rx7 owner.. hahahaha.

id say biiger injectors on the swapped engine, hence the safc.. try to get it all hooked up correctly and give it a go.. or swap injectors and run the older ecu with the newer engine and the injectors from the older engine..

haha, yep, I'm in love with rx7's... couldnt help it, despite all the money I lost on the last try... its not every day u come across 2 s5s that are black on black... lots of parts for sale too!

ok, I figured out that there were quite a few (most) of the safc wires not connected, so I found a diagram and reconnected the wires to the appropriate locations, it got dark, so tomorrow morning, I'm gonna sauder the connections, tape everything with electric tape, and try to start the car again, I've deflooded the engine and ensured that all vacum lines are on tight.

fingers crossed... I have tomorrow to get it running, or im gonna tow the cars off to a friend's farm... there I'll have the time to deal with it. but I'm not giving up on it yet...

thanks to everyones suggestions, keep them coming... they are my light in my hour(S) of darkness...

UPDATE:

I hooked up the safc, followed a guide in setting it up, deflooded the motor...tried to start it, engine turns... turns.. almost starts.. then goes back to just turning..... im on empty, so i figured that the 6-9 month old gas might have something to do with it, so i got 5 litres of supreme gas, added it in, deflooded the engine again (spark plugs keep coming out soaked), then tried to start again... same thing, it wants to start.. but somehow, it cant... any ideas?

COMPRESSION TEST. Is the first thing you should do before purchasing a rotary much less after you've bought it and can't figure out why the damn thing won't stay running.

supreme gas doesn't help anymore than 87 octane with an n/a. i'd sugguest drain the gas tank, get a new fuel filter, fuel pump filter, put in some chevron 87, and try starting the car.

my car did the same thing as yours a while ago when it WASN'T getting enough fuel for it to start. i also have an safc. if you have the safc hooked up, richen or lean out the mixture on the low throttle setting (800rpm is all you need) to test what is going on with your motor. it will take trial and error but you can do it.

compression check.

WTF is everyone talking about. Even if there is a small vac leak, the car would still start, but die immediately or slowly.

Sounds like the car is just cranking. Remove one spark plug from each housing and listen to the whoooooshes. They should all be even. If in doubt, then buy a compression tester. A cheap one will work. Just remove the schrader valve and watch the bounces. All three chambers should be fairly even. Do it to both rotors.

That should've been the FIRST thing to do when you bought them. Rotary motors don't like sitting for very long.

If IT really is injectors, then just remove them and check to see if they're leaking. Check if they're the right injectors. Right impedence? And cut out that POS S-AFC from the ECU. That'll eliminate any possibility of the SAFC messing with fuel mixture. If the car is stock, then let the stock ECU do its job.

Oh I'd hate to see what you're parents are going to do to you. If you knew you were going to get in trouble, then you should rethink your decisions.

How are the spark plugs? fouled? Warn? Either clean them really good buy new ones.

Since you have a S5, you can press the throttle down all the way to unflood the car. doing this shuts the injectors off. This also work on S4 engines but the injectors still fire but you are just allowing more air into the motor. Try holding the throttle down about 50-75% and try starting her up.

If you messed up the spark wire order that will also cause th engine to not start sometimes.

Leading One - Bottom Front
Leading Two - Bottom Rear
Trailing One - Top Front
Trailing Two - Top Rear

I have found retarding timing sometimes helps with hard starts. A few times advancing the timing help slightly too.

The one member that said to add oil through the plug holes, thats not a bad idea since the fuel washes away all the lubricating oil which can lower the compression, especially on high millage motors.

That engine should start without the SAFC. Just because the 90 had a SAFC, doesn't mean it had upgraded injectors or is modified to the point that it NEEDS it. The stock injectors work perfectly fine with a SAFC for adding or removing fuel.

Don't need to drain the tank. the engine should start fine on supreme fuel. 93?
