Thumbs down OVERHEATING/Coolant Leak...There Is Visual Leak..(seached)

sighs..just fugured out today that i was driving when the car was "overheating"...didnt know if the meter was half way it was considered a overheating.....got the car liek that and its always has been 1/2 way...

just checking the car out today...cuz it almost died(200rpm) when i started the car..the car was wamr already......and sumtimes it would even die out....then saw a puddle.....so then i drove to antoehr place...then reved my engine...and after looked under....there was a puddle again.....sniffed it smelled like coolant....havent found out where it was from yet......when i was reving i DID not know that 1/2 was consider overheat....and it was always staying at 1/2 no up or down....ever since i bought the car....like 3 weeks ago...

any ideas?...

umm.... try and figure out where the leak is coming from. Check radiator hoses, heater core hoses, throttle body coolant lines, etc.

What year is your car? If there's a puddle there's a leak somewhere. What is the general area of the leak under the car? Does it only leak after the car is warmed up and the coolant system pressurized?

It could still be the coolant seals if it has overheated greatly but there is definately a leak somewhere.

1/2 way is normal for series 5 for temperature. Check the engine heater hose right by the oil filter there's probably a hole there.

1/2 is normal!!!?!....whoa..then i m not scared nemore..cuz it just stays at half way...no going way above or neht8ing...if "ilike2eatricers" is reight about the 1/2 temp...then i wunt be too scared....yea..and also...."Check the engine heater hose right by the oil filter there's probably a hole there." it does look like its comming from there..just started raining down here so cant do check....but is that a major thing?...or its just a simple hose i need to replace?

Simple hose to replace but you should probably flush your coolant system since you probably dont know the last time it was done. Just because you arent overheating YET does not mean you shouldnt be scared. Find the leak and fix it ASAP. I hope your water level sensor is working so you know when you are low on coolant.

Let the car idle, and simply look for where the leak is coming from. Then replace the busted hose. Easy enough.

If it's 89-91 I guarantee you your car is supposed to run at 1/2 at normal operating temp. Anybody else will tell you that.

It is, my 91 reads the same.

86-88 = 1/4 position
89-91 = 1/2 position

My 91 S5 which is now up to 23,800 miles total miles on original engine runs at 1/2 of the temp guage regardless of how hot it is outside or how hard I'm driving it-we have lots of mountain steep passes here in Colorado that require me to keep the revs fairly high just to maintain highway cruising speeds.

I like using these. super flush fluid and then their flush and fill kit.

The flush and fill kit allows you to run a garden hose through the coolant system while the car is running. Worked fine for me. They are both cheap and you can get it at local autoparts shop.

I've never drained it from the block but after using the 2 products everything coming out of the coolant system was clear and mostly water.

Sounds like a TPS issue.
