Ok Im stumped.
After spending the past 3 hours taking the tranny out of my 88 RX7, I have come to some issues...
The tranny I have to replace it is what I assume to be a 86, stripped pretty far down. (It came from one of 2 cars, 86 or 88 turbo)
Now everything lines up great, everything fits except the mounting plate.
On the 88 tranny, I took everything off and switched it except for one sensor and the mounting plate.
The sensor on the 88 has 4 wires, where the 86 had just two, which one do I use??
The mounting plates holes are closer together on the 88 then the 86.
Do I just need to get a 86 mount? Will this fit my car?

I'm confused... mounting plates? The 5spds have the rear crossmember bar and the front is mounted to the engine...
The rear crossmember support can't really be "off" to my knowledge. I believe the s4 and s5 n/a trannies are the same with exception to some very minor appearance issues.
The s4 n/a and s4 turbo trannies however are quite different. If you have a s4 turbo tranny, the you will need the s4 turbo flywheel (n327? IIRC) and turbo clutch. Just the same if its an s4 n/a tranny youll need an s4 n/a clutch and s4 n/a flywheel (n330?).
Otherwise the s5 trannies would need the s/4 flywheel n/a or turbo since you have an s4 engine.
In any case, all of the 5speeds mount up in the same location if im not mistaking.
EDIT: IIRC the rear crossmember support can be installed several different ways... Make sure its the same way as it was on the first tranny...

I'm a bit confused. Do you have a Turbo II or a non-turbo car/drivetrain, and is this a turbo or non-turbo transmission?
There was no turbo model in '86, for one thing.
As for the sensor with four wires, I have an '86 so I'm not quite sure what you have that has four wires. Use the old one in this case.

How do I Identify the tranny that I have? (It either came from a 86 NA or a 88 turbo)
The crossmemeber mount on the "new" tranny has wider set apart bolt holes.
There are some cosmetic differences, but everything except the rear crossmemeber looks exactly the same.
Ill grab some pictures....

First picture:
Flywheel/cluch plate. How does this look?
Second picture, the old tranny.
Thrid picture the new tranny, see the difference in the mounting for the rear cross memeber??
Last the rear cross memeber...
A car buddy of mine just told me I should just grind, drill and tap, but I dont want to screw things up on this tranny.

Ok I think I figured out how to do it without causing way to many problems.
If it grind the bolts holding the rubber shockabsorbers down and weld them, it will fit the current mount.
It also looks like if I move the holes on the plate over a bit, it will bolt right up to the new tranny.
