Don't bother asking. There is huge debate on it. Some brands of synthetics are better than others, and generally, you'll find those who argue against synthetics in rotaries tend to have a severe level of nescience on the subject and lack any first-hand experience.
For what it worth, I would leave it in. I have run synthetics both with the MOP connected and without on several engines, and torn them apart later to look at the consequences. Based on what I saw, I will continue to run synthetics on every engine I own (save for break-in periods of new bearings).
Just leave it in and forget about it.

I know that HKS and RE-Amemiya and R-Magic all offer fully synthetic oil specifically for rotaries as well as a bunch of other Jap only companies. RX-7 magazine had a comparison of many many synthetic rotary only oils on an FD and how quickly each one warmed up and the max temps each oil got to on the same car on the dyno at sustained speed for a given period of time. I don't believe any of them were particularly special synthetics...most seemed a little thin to me, I think 5W30 was it.

Sean, as you know I have a Mazda rebuild in my car, and once I get the PD replaced this weekend, I will be starting it up for the first time. After the suitable break-in period, I too was thinking of synthetic oil.

Which brand and weight do you run?

Al

Royal Purple 20W50. Expensive, but I like it.
