oil seal?

Hi I was asking a question for a friend who just bought a 86 rx7.
The car runs but its leaking oil and he told me it had something to do with the oil seal. Does anyone know how to go about repairing this problem or would it require a full rebuild or a swap for a new engine. Its N/A with 160k and there are no heating problems. Any help offered would be greatly appreciated.

Where is it leaking oil? If the oil rings are bad then it would be an internal leak, and it would need a rebuild to fix. If its leaking anywhere else then its not the oil rings, and can be fixed be fixing the leaky part/hose.

I think we are going to need a more specific description of where it is leaking from to help.

IF it is leaking from the front or rear of the engine, it is likely a front or rear main oil seal on the shaft. You usually dont get much leakage that makes it to the ground, just a lot of slow seepage that makes for a greasy engine.

Could also be the oil cooler lines in the front of the car. They are prone to leakage and can even bust all at once, possibly costing you an engine.

lol he was posting for me...the problem was on start up it smoked like normal but it kept going..i read somewhere of a test for your oil seals which was to rev up to 6000rpm and hold it for 30 sec and if it let out a billow of smoke then the oil seals where shot....and low and behold there was smoke...so i am going to get a seal kit and rebuild yay.....

Well, better now, than later after an apex seal goes and takes out a housing. We'll be here for any help. If you don't have the FSM yet, see my sig. below for links.
