Oil Seals

Hi my rx7 smokes on start up and keeps smoking and i was told that that can be caused by bad oil seals but for the life of me i cant find any diagrams or anything showing how this can be done any suggestions of how to go about it

you will have to rebuild. sorry. Replace the seals by tearing the motor down. umm someone can explain to him in more detail.

Buying a "new" engine = chance of rebuilding it anyways.

why is this....don't you buy a new engine to bypass having the rebuild an old worn one??

First, I put "new" in quotes because there are no brand new engines.

Buying another engine is a bit of a gamble if you aren't planning on rebuilding it anyways. There are many variables about the engine that you as the new buyer can't be 100% sure about (like how good the previous owner took care of it).

Not everybody who gets a "new" motor has to rebuild it. I'm sure some people get lucky. I mean, the engine is already out of the car, and it would be a huge disappointment to drop the engine in, only to find out it's blown or will blow in 1000 miles.

theedn can't you just live with a smoker for now? I mean if you need the car right now i would recommend you to just run some heavy weight engine oil and drive it until you have the time + money to replace the engine. If the car starts and runs pretty good there is even a chance for you to pass smog with a smoker engine.

Is your car turbocharged?

If so, then the smoke may simply be from worn turbo seals.

atkins may be a little less expensive. I've got 25k on my rebuild with the atkins rotary kit. Viton seals and oem coolant o-rings. Awesome compression.

It would be foolish not to replace all or most wear items when you have the engine apart. Whether you do it yourself or not...

Besides, you'll at least need a gasket and o-ring set on top of the control o-rings.

If you decide to rebuild, I also suggest not using a pan gasket at all and just using permatex the right stuff sealant.

i have decided to just deal with the smoke until it dies or stops running and when that happens get a turbo which is only 1500 or so concidering the seals are 1200. but my question is im going to be using this car as a daily driver will having a turbo harm the life of it?

Seals are not $1200. You can get an master rebuild KIT for under $1k shipped. If you run the engine until it breaks a seal or loses coolant, you will spend significantly more to rebuild it since the broken seal will trash the insides of the motor and the leaking water will rust internal parts.

To add to that, you can't just put a turbo on an NA rotary. It's not that simple.

If you're talking about swapping a TII engine, what makes you think that used engine is going to be any better than this one? That's not a simple drop in swap either.

Your numbers are way off.
