Not the best place....

Man I need some help with an exam. Its history which I hate and can't get into. Please help me if you can. Thanks. Here is a copy of a mini-essay I have to do. I got the other one down but this one is too broad for me I guess. Please add in anything you can.

1.) Trace the Idea of Freedom in American History, beginning with colonial America and ending with reconstruction. What were some of the events that
helped birth the American Idea of Freedom? Who were some of the movers and shakers in its conception and implementation? How did they change America? Did this idea of freedom progress or regress during this period of American history?

I really just need 2 or 3 main points and some facts to back them up. Right now I only have taxation w/o representation as a main point and things such as the Boston Tea Party. I am kinda stuck. Please help guys. Thanks again.

I'm pretty sure that the whole move to the "New World" was to escape religious persecution by the Catholic church. So whoever made the idea to move across the ocean was probably a shaker. That guy started colonial america.

Pilgrims were Puritians leaving the anti-Puritan sentimant of old world Britian. They sought freedom in a new land. They set up this new free would around a system of city councils which set standards for the citizrns to uphold the ideals of the Puritan church. Basically, freedom based on freedom of religion. Next, the division of the North and South. The Northern belief of freedom centered around equality for all. The Sounthern economy was based on the slave labor to maintain it's stability. In the South, freedom was for white landowners. As the 13 colonies grew, slavery moved further and further South, as large cotton and tobacco plantations were formed. In the North, the Constitution convention of 1778 set up a government based on the liberties of rich, white landowners. There were no provisions for freedom of slaves. As the Southern economoy flourised during the early 1800's, it's dependece on the slave trade caused many Northerns to form Abolitionist groups, which sought the elimination of the institution of slavery. I'm quite sure you know the Civil War, so I see no need to explain that. Now, that is a RREEAALLYY short and quick history of freedom. Religious freedom to racial segregation. Thomas Jeffeerson was a slaveowner, but spoke early sentiments of abolution. He understood the econmic need for slavery, but wrote many essays on it's evil. He called it a "necessary evil." Ok, others who effected freedom were:Abraham Lincoln and Fredrick Douglas (famous ex-slave). Man, I am a history minor, but it is 2:30 am here, and I am really tired right now. Hope this little bit can help in some way. PM me in the morning if you need more help.

Man thanks so much for actually helping me instead of just telling me that I should find everything on my own. I have actually read all the chapters for the test tonight but am having trouble with these essays. They are half my grade for the test. Here is the other one and what I am going with so far. Any ideas on this let me know. Oh and on the first one, most of what I have is on later on, near the civil war...do you know of any prominent people that I could use from b/t the colonies and the civil war? Perhaps some from the American rev? I am looking now but its getting late and I am sure I am just missing some stuff. Thanks again and here is the other essay question:

2.) Imagine yourself somewhere in time in America History (between the late 1400’s through 1877) and describe your world to me. Tell me about the
“current events” of your time, describe your contemporaries who helped shape
these events and the world around you, and write about the ideas that created the America of your time.

Right now I have the year of 1861 and the body paragraphs consisting of:
1) current events:
a) the forming of the Confederate States of America
b) start of the civil war
c) battles of Fort Sumter and Bull Run(first one)
2) people of the time:
a) Lincoln-president(obvious)
b) John Brown-attempted to start slave revolt in 1859
c) ?(Looking for a main leader from the south that caused the separating actually. So far I haven't seen one mentioned but you would think there was a main person involved)
3) ideas of the time:
a) abolition of slavery by the North
b) freedom to have slavery by the south
c) attempt to gain control over federal govt by both north and south for own financial gains

Feel free to add or change anything you think will make for a better essay. Thanks.

Been studying for this test all night.

Agreed.

As a side note, I HATED those multi-part questions when I was in school. 5 questions that turn into 20 by the time you're done.

I love being 30.

If I were to tackle that essay, I would summarize the declaration of independence, then one by one, discuss the main points with in it and apply them to the lives of the colonists and the political situation around that time.
