overheat question

On A car I am about to buy the engine is blown. They guy said it is because it blew a heater hose and overheated for 30 seconds.

I am planning onrebuilding the engine but since it overheated does it need anything special? what exactly happens when they overheat? just blow an apex seal or does it toataly take out the housing?

Thx guys

Well it depends how bad it overheated. The housings are aluminum so when heated they will warp. If it overheated enough to blow the engine then my guess would be that your housings are shot. What year is it? If it's an '86, don't buy it, it's not worth it. The rear housings always blow right at a water jacket.

HEAT KILLS!!!

If overheating can cause the heads on an iron block GM 350 engine to warp and/or crack, imagine the damage to a lightweight engine... you are in Oregon; did the motor blow in winter? What I'm getting at is did the PO run the car without anti-freeze? That could have paradoxically caused the overheat. The blown hose dousing the overheated block with water could warp things too. (BTW, it was probably more than 30 sec- It had to build up enough heat/ pressure to blow the hose) Since you plan to do a total rebuild, you should be okay. New seals and gaskets, replace worn or scored moving parts, fill 'er up with oil and your golden!
Is this your first rebuild? Get an experienced mentor or a reputable rotary-experienced shop to help or to do the job right. One more thing, is it Turbo or n/a? Turbo adds a new dimension...

its N/A its a 90 GXL I picked it up for 1250 so when I rebuild it the totalr car cost still woln't be over 2500 witch is cool with me. He said he was at block buster and he was in the car with it idling, his friend walked out, saw water poring out from under the car and told him to turn it off. the guy shut it down and found the hose that had a crack in it, he said the whole hose was totaly hard. He replaced the hose and put new coolent in and it would never start up again.
