I finally got tired of all the Hondas, and the insurance of my Integra, so I decided to look at another car. One much better I think than any Honda I've ever seen. Obviously, I chose the 2nd Gen RX7, for a number of reasons. One: RWD. Two: In expensive. Three: ricers haven’t gotten a hold of it. and finally, it looks awesome, and I heard its a fun car!

Anyway; I was wondering if someone could enlighten me on the different trim levels of a 1991 RX7 and their specs. A link to one of these sites would be great, but if someone could tell me, I'd be happy

This link has some stats scanned from an 88 and 90 RX-7 brochure. The 91 stats will be a little different, but should be somewhat close to the 90 stats. Hopefully someone can give you a link to a similar pic of a 91 brochure, as I have found the various websites to be inaccurate when it comes to trim levels.

Oh yeah, and check out this link so that you know what to look for when buying an RX-7:

Jarod,

Welcome to the forum.

The #1 thing about the 7s is they are an uncomprimising sports car - not "sporty" or "sports coupe." Better handling than the mustangs, better accerlation than the 5.0s (turob II model).

They are production race cars - especially the turbo II model. Once you've driven one hard - you'll appreciate the exception handling, fast acceleration, unlimited revving (no pistons to break), wide powerban, smooth ride, comfy seat, and cockpit controls. It's great when you learn to use the porshe inspired "rear steering" on a track as well.

The rx7s also have a larger following than most other cars. Japan, America, and Australia all have companies developing for these cars, so you have lots of performance upgrades, bodykits, gague pods, accessories, model cars, slot cars, coffeeytable books, etc... to choose from.

There's also the infamous 3 rotor engine upgrade for a HUGE shot of torque and even more HP. The NAs max out at around 200HP with NA mods, the Turbo II hanldes 450+HP, and the 3 rotor 650+HP.

In the US the NA models are SE (base), GXL (luxury), GTU (sport), GTU-S (racing sport), Sport (sport), convertible, and a few dealer models including a 2+2 (rear seats). The Turbo II and GTU has a minor OEM bodykit on it. The 89-92 years have the most HP in the of the 2nd gens, but you might find a better deal on a 86-88 as well.

You should check out your regional rx7 club and attend one of there meets. I'm sure someone would be happy to give you a ride.

Have a glance at my 2nd gen pics and bodykit pics here as well.

Search on ebaymotors.com. Great place to find pictures of cars. I wouldn't suggest buying one off there, though.

WOW! Thank you very much! Im aiming for a newer car, I think it might have lower milage and less problems, but who knows. What is the insurance like on these cars(5s tubo II) for lets say, a 16 or 17 year old male driver with a B average in school...?

Sorry for the ignorant questions. You guys are much nicer than the people at the Honda boards.

Welcome to the board guy! Glad to see we've brought in another ex honda fan. I used to go to that superhonda site myself when I had my integra. God what a waste of human life on stupid mods which make at most 3 hp.

Insurance?? it depends. Insuring my RX7 alone is actually less expensive then insuring my turbo saab, but I am guessing it is because of the age difference.

I pay 1500 per year for the saab, when I add my rx7 as the second vehicle it will go up to 2200 for the year, thats 50/50/100 5k bodily and NO COLLISION or theft/fire/glass. You had an integra?? what year/make? I bet the rx7 will not be much more or much less.

Oh btw Im single, 22 years old, Im on my own plan, and I have a load of old tickets. if you are under your parents it will be much cheaper and if you have no tickets then thats a good thing. If I had to guess, if you are clean and under the folks... maybe 1200 MAX for the one rx7 (s5, tII)

No, I had no integra, I was aimng for a 94 4dr GSR white, but i figured, waste rip off. I am only 15 , I hope that will not dampen your respects for me, but I want to do as much reaserch on this car before I purchase one. SO i was wondering what insurance would be like, b/c I know they aren't expensive cars.

Are you sure you want a RWD turbo as your first car? I still have my maxima from my 16th bday and I've learned a lot of stuff from it. Guess it pays to have something that's not so powerfull. If I had an RX7 as my first car, I probably would have wrecked it. You'd be surprised. I always said I'd never race a car or anything. Guess what. I did and I almost got in a wreck. If I had something twice as powerfull as my max, I probably wouldn't be here today. I don't suggest you get a civic as your first car or anything, but talk to some people who got some fast sports cars as their first car and see who wrecked it/got a ticket and who came out without a scratch. Ask a bunch of 17+yo people.

I wouldn't suggest it, but chances are, my opionion means absolutely jack to you, so just take my one bit of advice and think it over. Your insurance will be decent. Probably in the 2k per year range. As long as you don't get a ticket or get in a wreck, your fine. With a TII, that's gonna be a hard thing to do, especially when it's your first car.

Buying RX7

Jarod I'm 17 and I got a TII as my second car. My first car was a Honda CRX Si, not anywhere as fast as a TII but it was fun, reliable, and was a good first car. I'm glad I sold my honda and went for the TII there is a world of differnce. I went though all the cars trust me supra turbo's, mr2 turbo's, dsm's but I ended up getting the TII whatever that's worth. Gamezilla does have a point though, I'm glad I had the crx first because I leared alot from it how to drive 5-speed, how to keep a car nice and maintain it, and most importantly how NOT TO RIDE SOMEONE'S ***!! So when I got my TII I got I nice clean one and already went though all of the things not to do so I can keep this one nice. Not that I'm a perfect driver now but there is a world of diffence between the first time I sat in my Honda and the first time I sat in my RX7. The TII is awesome and I recommend it, just some other things to consider.

Jarod,

Savanna rx-7s are native to Japan - it was the dealer network that sold them. Japan always has the coolest models that aren't sold in the US (skyline, JC cosmo, etc..). For the rx7s they had a turbo II convertible and a limited edition 225HP turbo II.

You might price the rx7s from 86-91 with your insurance carrier to get an idea. I'm paying $400/yr per car with $8000 of coverage on each from progressive, but I'm a homeowner.

Yeah it's all about cool cars hear, not talking smack. The 7s & other mazda rotaries have an international loyal following so we're always interested in what your doing to yours

Gamezilla has a point on fast cars & 1-2 years of driving experience. I couldn't turn left and crashed 2 cars because of it But my friends drove like old grannies and never dinged theirs - go figure.

Guess it's all about how much respect you have for you car Let me diddo gamezilla's comments on tickets. The laws are much tuffer these days. They'll yank your license (like that crx trying to race me in a speedtrap). Driving a 7 - every 5.0 and POS non vtech honda wants to race you - so you have to use a little restraint (well on the main roads anyway )

Well zoom zoom. Hope you find a sweet model. The badest models are the GTU-S, Turbo II, 87 Sport, and convertible. The ez to get models are the GXL and SE.

Any more questiosn?

First car

Hey, When i was 16 I got my learners and i got a peice of **** 4 cyl mustang and drove it for a month, then the engine blew (i got the car for free), so i had a lil bit of drivnig from that, then i waited and got a 87 Turbo II. on my 17 th bday i got one, 3rd day i had it, i didnt know the rear tires were extrememly bald and i hydropllanned it into the ditch at 80 k, the driver window broke and blewup in my face and the whole driver side of the car was fucked i was fine but my car wasent !. Ever since that day everything has went wrong with the car, I wish I got a 240sx instead, to start with, then later get a RX. but its too late now, if i were you, get a old supra or somthing to practice the rear wheel stuff. I would have, when your young and u get ur license ur eager to go fast, just like me, and it always happens that somthing goes wrong.

Well a huge tach & oversized mufflers might be for show.

For the NAs, stage I mods are usually intake, exhaust, cataytic converter, downpipe, cold air box, fresh air headlight intake, ignition system upgrade, and a performance chip. Stage II gets into engine porting. NAs max somewhere around 200-220 rwhp.

The Turbo's can have 2-5 stages for 200-650+HP. The above plus fuel system upgrades, turbo upgrades, aftermarket computers, etc..

There's also a 3 rotor engine upgrade for massive HP.
